Overall

Let me start this review by saying I WAS an avid fan of Village Bake Shoppe. Most of my family has been purchasing cakes from them since I was a kid. Even after we moved away from Allentown, we would travel to get baked goods there. Cake in general holds a special place in many celebrated occasions, especially weddings. The moment a wedding cake is cut is a moment every couple should remember forever. The cake is something everyone goes home and talks about, right along with the dress and flowers. Cake is always a feature being talked about for weeks after the wedding. So when I see a bride in tears over her cake from the bakery I suggested/favored, not only am I mad, I am ashamed and guilt-ridden.

The delivery people where extremely rude and arrived an hour late. They showed up at 2pm when they said the cake would be delivered by 1pm, the ceremony started at 2pm (needless to say we had to start late.) Further, within an hour the cake had begun to tilt, leaning to one side. It was sagging in the middle and beginning to sink. Even worse and what had the bride in tears – were the decorations. When I say they were horrible I am not exaggerating – a five year old could have done better. It was an alternative biker themed wedding, and if the bakery couldn’t do what was asked they should have said something. The side with the rainbow roses, while ‘sloppy’ pretty, made the other side of the cake stand out even more. Your bakery was asked to airbrush skulls on the alternate side of the cake; the baker convinced the couple they could achieve the same result piping skulls onto the cake. The baker was given references and they told the couple they could do what they asked. When I say a five year old could have done a better job, I am not kidding. These were rounded, diamond shapes with smile mouths. Some of the ‘skulls’ looked more like clown balloons. It looked like something you could buy in a supermarket’s sale area after Halloween. The flames between each layer were nothing more than sporadic, thick piped, red frosting between red roses. Furthermore the cake was DRY, crumbly dry – and several people FOUND HAIR in the cake. The hair was not on the icing like someone cutting may have lost it, but inside, baked in where it pulled the cake apart when removed. Only redeeming quality was the whipped frosting was light and tasted nice.

I have never been so disgusted by a cake. I am not sure if someone new made this but whoever did should be fired! Not only will I never buy a cake from them again - I will tell everyone I know never to go here again!

Good cake, flowers so-so

I got both my wedding cake and flowers for my wedding reception here. The manager who I discussed my cake with was professional, nice, and gave great advice. He steered me away from a more expensive wedding cake design and helped me find the cake that was both right for my budget and for my reception size (which was 50 people-small). The cake was beautiful and tasted good. My disappointment was that I was never given samples of different cakes. I had my heart set on a red velvet cake but it would have been nice to sample the different fillings and frostings. So that was a disappointment. As for the flowers, they were quite expensive. They were beautiful buy my mother (who is a long-time gardener) thought they were overpriced and a bit too sparse for the money spent. So overall I would recommend the bakery but the flowers are probably better off purchased elsewhere.
