Electrocardiogram
The technologist will clean three small areas of your chest and place small, sticky electrode patches on these areas. Men may expect to have their chest partially shaved to help the electrodes stick. The electrodes are attached to an electrocardiograph (EKG) monitor, which charts your heart’s electrical activity during the test.

Kidney Cancer
Sometimes, an IV will be placed to administer intravenous contrast material to help better define a specific structure or disease process. Patients with renal failure cannot receive IV contrast, so please alert the CT technologist if you have any history of kidney disease (kidney failure, kidney surgery, kidney cancer, single kidney). Patients with diabetes and high blood pressure may be at risk for kidney disease. Also please alert the technologist if you believe you are allergic to IV contrast (iodine). Because CT uses radiation, in most cases an alternative test is used in pregnant women. Please alert the technologist if there is a chance you may be pregnant.

Ultrasound
Ultrasound is a noninvasive imaging test which uses sound waves to create high resolution images of your internal organs. Ultrasound uses NO radiation. The ultrasound machine is a relatively small, mobile, bedside device with a probe held against your skin. Warm gel is used to transmit sound wave between the probe and your body. You will be asked to lie on a padded stretcher, and may be asked to roll on your side to improve the quality of the images. The sonographer may also use gentle probe pressure; let her know if you feel discomfort or if you feel anything unusual.
MRI
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a large, donut-shaped machine which uses a strong magnetic field to produce high resolution images of your internal organs to characterize potential disease processes. MRI is a noninvasive procedure and uses NO radiation. The MRI machine causes no tissue damage or harm, but does make loud tapping or knocking noises. Earplugs will be placed to minimize patient disturbance, and you will be able to communicate with the MRI technologist at any time during your procedure with our intercom system. MRI can be used to evaluate numerous conditions, including joint pain, bone pain, back pain, headache, neurologic symptoms, abdominal pain, abnormal laboratory tests, vascular abnormalities, and various tumors/masses.

Nuclear Medicine
We are exposed to radiation from natural sources each day. Radiography (x-rays), CT, nuclear medicine, and DEXA all use radiation to form images. These exams provide valuable information so that referring healthcare providers are better able to make accurate diagnoses. There are many different ways to measure radiation, and different organs and tissues demonstrate varying sensitivity to radiation exposure. In general, young people (and fetuses) are more radiation sensitive than adults.
Mammography
It is an x-ray of your breast that physicians use to detect breast cancer. It is one of the most effective early detection methods the medical community has as some lumps may appear on the x-ray years before it may be felt. Mammograms are recommended for women aged 40 and older or have a familial history of breast cancer. Mammography services are generally covered 100% by insurance once every 365 days (or 1 year).

Note: Because there are certain forms of coronary disease -- such as "soft plaque" atherosclerosis – that escape detection during this CT scan, it is important to remember that this test is not absolute in predicting your risk for a life-threatening event, such as a heart attack.
