Val came to us in 2017, all the way from California, where she has over 20 years of experience working within the animal care field. Val is responsible for exam care and stocking the hospital. Calming pets during exams & vaccinations is her gift. Val is our resident "cat whisperer". Val fits in with our team and always finds the positive in any situation. She is a great team player with a great sense of humor. Married in 2018 in a beautiful ceremony in their rose garden at home, Val and Don raise ducks chickens, rabbits, and have numerous cats, plus 2 dogs. Pictured with Val are Moe Moe (recently deceased) and Cinnamon the Pooh. Puppy "Pete", a surprise gift from Don, recently joined the family.

Comprehensive Examination
Winter wellness: Has your pet had his/her preventive care exam (wellness exam) yet? Cold weather may worsen some medical conditions such as arthritis. Your pet should be examined by a veterinarian at least once a year, and it’s as good a time as any to get him/her checked out to make sure (s)he is ready and as healthy as possible for cold weather.

Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria): Each year, hunting dogs in the US die as a result of drinking from water contaminated with blue-green algae. Toxic blue-green algae contain liver and/or neurotoxins and often occur during hot, dry weather and give the water a “pea soup” appearance. Signs of poisoning show up immediately, and include vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, collapse, tremors, seizures, and jaundice (yellow skin and gums). Death from the neurotoxin can occur within minutes while death from the liver toxin may take several days. Because treatment is often unsuccessful, prevention is key. Providing fresh water for your dog is imperative.

Diabetes Treatment
The most common cause of cataracts in the dog is inherited cataract formation. Other causes include injuries to the eye or diseases such as diabetes mellitus (sugar diabetes). Some cataracts appear to occur spontaneously and are age related.
Heart Disease Treatment
Dr. Justin Smith & Dr. Jody Roderick opened Greenfield Animal Hospital on December 15, 1997. We chose the name Greenfield for its connection to our valley’s history. Our opening day ceremony with the Mayor and Chamber of Commerce was cut short by our first patient after the little dog ate his owner’s lunch and heart medication. After saving the little dog’s life, Greenfield Animal Hospital was on a roll! 24 years later we love our careers as much as we did on that first day! We care for dogs, cats, and horses, plus help with the 4-H and FFA project animals. As a husband and wife team we strive to bring the best medicine and surgery care with a family atmosphere to our vocation. We believe in God, USA, family, and career or school (in that order)!
Kidney Disease Treatment
Avoid Mistletoe & Holly: Holly, when ingested, can cause pets to suffer nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Mistletoe can cause gastrointestinal upset and cardiovascular problems. And many varieties of lilies can cause kidney failure in cats if ingested. Opt for just-as-jolly artificial plants made from silk or plastic, or choose a pet-safe bouquet.

Making an appointment with a Vet is paramount when getting a new cat, especially if it hasn’t been spayed or neutered. Spaying or neutering your cat is the single most important action you can take in giving your cat a long, happy and healthy life. The veterinarians here at Greenfield Animal Hospital recommend Feline Leukemia and FIV testing before a new cat or kitten is introduced into the home.

- Have your pet ride inside the car rather than in the back of a pick-up or inside a camper. We recommend your pet be in a crate while traveling.
Senior Pet Care
We have an “open door” policy and are proud to show our clients how we care for their best friends. Being part of our community means that we support 4-H and FFA, providing hospital tours and bite prevention education for all our YES kindergarteners and home schoolers, job shadows for middle and high school students, and externships for Veterinary Students. We support the low cost spay & neuter projects and pet adoptions and arrange for free spays and neuters for shelter pets when we have 3rd & 4th year Vet Students. We offer special services for Senior people and Senior pets and our hospital is very wheel chair friendly!
