To start, my trustworthy mecha...

To start, my trustworthy mechanic of twenty years has retired and I feel like I lost a favorite tooth and my tongue keeps going back to the void in my mouth.

My wife had the oil emergency alarm go off on our '99 VW 6 Cyl Passat. She called and I made arrangements for AAA to tow the vehicle to a near-by oil change center-- who were very courteous. Later on she called and told me that the oil change people said, "the car may need a new oil gasket on the lower pan--but that they didn't do those kinds of repairs-- so they just replaced the oil."

I called Prospect Foreign Car Center because it is conveniently within walking distance. The office woman said to have the car in by 8 a.m.. the next day. I took the car to them on time and told the owner the situation and he made a disparaging remark about the oil-change company. Late that afternoon, the owner told me (over the phone), "I had leaking gaskets--not in the lower pan (an easy repair), but gaskets on the upper engine (never mentioning the specific gasket) and saying "it's gonna run you (me) $1378 to fix the problems." I later assumed that NOT naming the specific type of gasket was a way to test my knowledge level.

I thanked him and asked him if he would show me where the leaks were before I said yes. He said he would and when I got there, the owner wasn't, but had the mechanic who worked on the car point out where the leaks were. I could see no discernible leaks--just oily grime from twelve years of an engine working efficiently. When I gave the mechanic a somewhat doubtful look, he sheepishly said that it wasn't that bad of a problem, "yet," but that it was safer to deal with it now. I thanked him and asked him to put the plastic housings back on so I could drive it away. I was charged forty-five dollars for their "diagnostic service."

In candor, I left with a bad feeling and when I got home I called an old friend who knows a great deal about cars and asked him if he had a trustworthy mechanic. He said he did, but the guy was out in Canton--an inconvenience and at that point I felt it to be worth it. A trustworthy mechanic is as important as a faithful wife, an ethical politician or a skillful dentist.

They put the car on a lift and examined the engine above and below and found nothing wrong with the car. I asked how much they wanted for their time and they said forget about.

That place is Valley Imported Auto in Canton. Guess who will be my NEW mechanic? I find it better to be inconvenienced than to be swindled!
