MRI
Another structure that can become injured on the medial side of the elbow is the ulnar collateral ligament. This is diagnosed clinically and confirmed on MRI. This injury typically improves with conservative management. Surgery is reserved for elite level athletes with a reconstruction of the ligament. This has become a very common procedure in professional baseball pitchers and is referred to as “Tommy John surgery.” Pitchers typically return to competition one year after surgery.

General Surgery
Eric Olson was born in New Haven, CT, but grew up in Wilmington, Delaware. After graduating from The Tatnall School, he attended Princeton University on a four-year Army ROTC scholarship. There he studied biology, graduating Magna Cum Laude and earning the Superior Cadet award in his class. He attended Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, gaining his MD degree in 1984. There he met and married his classmate Dr. Beatriz R. Olson. They went to the University of Pittsburgh for seven years of graduate medical education. Dr. Olson served as a house officer for two years of General Surgery and then performed a year of orthopaedic laboratory research, including investigations into artificial ligament biocompatabilty and spine biomechanics. He completed three years of orthopaedic residency followed by a year of sports medicine fellowship with Drs. Freddie Fu and Chris Harner.
Orthopedics
Dr. Mariani recently attended the Arthroscopy Association of North America 33rd Annual meeting to stay abreast of the most recent cutting edge research on arthroscopic treatment of shoulder and knee injuries. The highlights of the meeting included Dr. James Andrews speaking on the challenges learned as a team physician and the USA perspective on state of the art treatment of anterior shoulder instability. Italy was the guest nation at the meeting and leading Italian surgeons in the field of orthopedics shared their international expertise in the field of arthroscopy, including ACL injuries in soccer players.
Arthroscopy
Arthroscopy is a surgical procedure in which a joint is viewed using an arthroscope (a small fiber-optic viewing instrument made up of a tiny lens, light source and video camera). arthroscope sends the image to a television monitor through which the surgeon can see the structure of the joint in detail. The surgeon uses arthroscopy to repair or remove damaged tissue.
Joint Replacement
Joint replacement is a surgical procedure in which the joint surface is replaced with an orthopaedic prosthesis when there is severe joint pain that is not alleviated by less-invasive therapies. Joints may be partially or totally replaced, depending on the location and severity of the problem.

Neurosurgery
Tina Dunbar is a NCCPA board certified physician assistant who has been practicing orthopaedics and neurosurgery in the Waterbury community since 2000. She comes to Waterbury Orthopaedic Associates after over ten years in orthopedics and orthopedic surgery at Waterbury Hospital and St. Mary’s Hospital. Tina is skilled in sports medicine, comprehensive fracture care, arthritis/total joint replacements as well as hand and foot surgery.
Arthroscopy
In the past, treatment of orthopaedic injuries involved extensive surgery, including large incisions, a hospital stay, and a prolonged recovery period. Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive alternative to these open surgeries and results in a reduction of complications reduced pain and swelling, and shorter recovery times. Additionally, almost all arthroscopic procedures can be performed in an outpatient setting.
Knee Replacement
After chronic knee pain began to cramp Gary’s active lifestyle, he decided it was time to do something. He sought help from Waterbury Orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Eric Olson. Physical Therapy
Rotator cuff problems are the most common cause of shoulder pain in individuals greater than 40 years old. When someone has inflammation involving the bursa, which cushions the rotator cuff or the tendon is just strained but not torn, physical therapy and activity modification can help someone to improve and manage their symptoms two thirds of the time. If the rotator cuff tendon is torn completely through, however, frequently the best treatment is to have the tendon operatively repaired back to the bone from which it tore. This often helps relieve the night pain, pain with reaching and improve the power of the shoulder for active individuals with rotator cuff tear.
Tennis Elbow
Tennis elbow is one of the most common conditions that I see in the office. Although commonly seen in tennis players and other racquet sports, you do not have to be a tennis player to suffer from this affliction. This can affect young mothers caring for their children and workers that perform repetitive activities over the course of the day. This is an overuse type of injury that can interfere with activities of daily living.
Shoulder Pain
Ankle Sprain
Initial treatment is similar for both sprains and strains. Utilizing the RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation) protocol can help diminish pain and swelling. Ultimate treatment depends on the specific structure injured. A Grade 3 ankle sprain is typically managed conservatively, while a Grade 3 knee injury (i.e. ACL tear) can lead to surgery. Treatment of Grade 3 strains depend more on whether it is a muscle tear versus a tendon rupture. Muscle tears are almost always treated conservatively. Their rich blood supply means good healing potential. A tendon rupture typically does not fare as well. That is why tendon ruptures (i.e. Achilles, quadriceps, rotator cuff tears) are often surgically repaired.

Dr. Mariani has comprehensive training in fracture management, joint arthroplasty, upper extremity injuries, and general orthopaedic conditions. Her particular area of expertise is in state-of-the-art arthroscopic management of shoulder, knee, elbow, and ankle injuries. She has a specific interest in complex ligamentous injuries of the knee, rotator cuff tears, and cartilage injuries.
Podiatric Surgery
Alan Worked at Waterbury Hospital for nearly 18 years as a hospital-based Orthopaedic PA.
