At Island Animal Hospital of Venice we believe that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!!! However, not all pets are the same. Every pet should have a comprehensive exam from our licensed veterinarian every year with discussions of preventative vaccinations, preventative parasite medications, and testing tailored to the individual petâ€™s lifestyle and risk assessment. Our veterinary hospital follows the current AVMA and AAHA extended vaccine protocols to ensure your pet is getting the protection it needs but not over vaccinated. (Low cost vaccine clinics donâ€™t follow this current extended protocol and usually donâ€™t do a full physical exam. If you compare apples to apples on what you are getting, they arenâ€™t usually low cost after all!!)
Veterinary Ophthalmology
Comprehensive Examination
Many times our vetarinarian can diagnose whatâ€™s wrong just by performing a thorough nose to tail physical exam. Sometimes diagnostic testing or x-rays of your pet are needed to get a diagnosis. After the examination, your pet may need lab work to assess the various body functions such as kidney, liver, blood counts, and diabetes, etc. We have the capability to do most testing either in house or through the use of an outside laboratory. Sometimes referral for an ultrasound may be needed. Island Animal works with some of the best veterinarians in Sarasota for ultrasound to help get a diagnosis. Periodontal Disease Treatment
Halitosis (bad breath), drooling, and refusing to eat can all be signs of dental disease. Unfortunately, when advanced stage dental disease (periodontal disease) is diagnosed, extractions are often necessary as the tooth is usually infected and/or loose. Frequent professional dental cleanings along with home dental care will greatly reduce the chance of your pet ever needing extractions in its life.

Wound and Fracture Care
Besides complicated tooth extractions, Dr. Teuscher can also perform oral surgery and mandible (jaw) fracture repair. Sometimes extensive oral tumors (growths) are found that need surgical removal and/or biopsy. Other times fractures of the mouth or jaw require repair and can usually be performed using an external fixator or wires and pins.

Dental Surgery
Did you know that 80% of middle age dogs and cats have some level of dental disease? Dental disease is very common and its severity can vary widely among breeds and age groups of dogs and cats. At home dental care such as brushing, oral rinses, and chews can help greatly. Most dogs and cats will still need dental cleanings in their life. We have a separate dental suite equipped to tackle all of your animal dentistry needs. We have what it takes to handle anything from routine ultrasonic scaling and polishing of the teeth to oral surgery and extractions. Routine pet dental cleanings involve gas anesthesia, ultrasonic scaling, polishing, and fluoride application. Gas anesthesia is necessary to successfully clean under the gum line, assess the integrity of each tooth on the oral exam, and for the safety of your pet and the staff. All the standard precautions are taken before we provide dental care to any animal, including pre-anesthesia lab work, anesthesia risk scoring, and tailored anesthetic protocols.
Veterinary Surgery
Surgery and anesthesia should not be taken lightly and we are honored to be your trusted surgery team. We adhere to high surgery and anesthesia standards to optimize the safest gas anesthesia and best surgical outcomes. At Island Animal Hospital of Venice our veterinarians perform pre-surgical bloodwork to assess your pets various body functions for anesthesia. Anesthesia risk scoring is done as well as a tailored anesthesia protocol for each patient. We utilize gas anesthesia for our pet surgery which allows for constant adjusting based on the patient needs as well as a quicker recovery. While Dr. Teuscher is performing surgery, your pet is always monitored by a trained staff member as well as various machines checking pulse oximetry, heartbeat, blood pressure, etc. We utilize circulating warm water blankets as patient comfort and body temperature is a high priority.

How much grooming do I want to give my dog? Some dogs seem to repel dirt, while others seem to attract it. Long curly hair will need to be brushed often, while short flat coats will hardly need more than an occasional shampooing.
