General Info
The DCH Diabetes Center, a Recognized Education Program by the American Diabetes Association, serves as an education and resource facility for people with diabetes and their families.
Services/Products
The DCH Diabetes Center provides training by nurses & nutritionists in self-management skills for people with diabetes. These skills include control of blood sugar, prevention of diabetes complications & improved self-care skills. The DCH Diabetes Center focuses on educating those diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. In type 2 diabetes, either the body does not produce enough insulin or the cells ignore the insulin. Insulin is necessary for the body to be able to use glucose for energy. When you eat food, the body breaks down all of the sugars & starches into glucose, which is the basic fuel for the cells in the body. Insulin takes the sugar from the blood into the cells. When glucose builds up in the blood instead of going into cells, it can lead to diabetes complications. The center's education programs focus on three groups of people who have type 2 diabetes: Newly diagnosed - people who have recently learned they have diabetes, & have no knowledge of how to live with & manage the disease. Stepping Toward Control - people who have had diabetes for a while, but have either had no previous education on managing their disease or simply need a refresher. Gestational diabetes - the expectant mother who has learned she has gestational diabetes. A one-time class is offered to educate moms-to-be on how to manage their condition until the end of the pregnancy. Anyone can develop diabetes, but you have a greater risk if: * You are overweight. * You are female. * You are over the age of 45. * You don’t exercise regularly. * You have a family history of diabetes. * You are African-American. * You are a woman who has had a baby weighing nine pounds or more at birth.
