The dental cleaning procedure begins with a detailed oral exam, accomplished by thorough probing of the teeth and charting of any abnormalities noted. An ultrasonic scaler is used to remove any calculus and tartar from the teeth and a manual curette (scaler) is then used to clean beneath the gum line. A polishing follows (to smooth any enamel defects) and Oravet (sealant) is then applied along the gumline of all teeth.

Dr. Sondra Brown has been offering behavior consultations for dogs and cats since 2003. She has extensive continuing education in this area, including the North American Veterinary Conference Postgraduate Institute in Behavior Medicine Level I in 2002 and Level 2 in 2004.
Nutritional Counseling
Dr. Jennifer L. Smith originally comes from San Pablo, California, with stops in New York and Georgia on her journey to Florida. Always fascinated by all types of animals, she worked in multiple animal related fields for 9 years prior to attending veterinary school. She obtained her DVM from the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine in 2003 and then went on to earn her MBA from the University of North Alabama in 2008, while working full time as an emergency veterinarian. Dr. Smith has worked in both small animal and mixed animal practices over the last two decades, joining Northwood in October of 2012 as a relief veterinarian and transitioning to full time in 2014. She enjoys general medicine and surgery but has a soft spot for feline medicine. She also has a particular interest in the human-animal bond, by completing advanced training and obtained her Human-Animal Bond Certification as well as Pet Nutrition Coach Certification. Just before the beginning of vet school, she fell in love with Bullmastiffs and they have been part of her rather large family ever since. When she’s not at work in the hospital, she is often working at home on her small farm, staying busy with her horses, dogs, cats, chickens, pheasants, peafowl, and honeybees!
Comprehensive Examination
Physical exams and fecal checks are recommended to be performed on your pets twice a year. One year for a dog is like 5-7 years between exams for a person. If we can detect a disease process early, or note something about the condition of your pet (such as obesity) that could predispose your pet to illness, early intervention may be able to stop or at least slow the progression of the disease. Outdoor cats should be screened for Feline Leukemia and FIV yearly through a blood test.

Illness Treatment

Parasites Treatment and Control
All susceptible species (dogs, cats, and ferrets) should be on a monthly parasite prevention program, specifically protecting against heartworms, intestinal parasites, fleas and/or ticks. Some of these intestinal parasites are zoonotic, meaning you can get them from your pets. The whole family, including the pets, are healthier with regular veterinary care. Consult with one of our staff to devise the appropriate preventative program to meet the individual needs of your pets.
Pain Management
All patients undergoing surgery are carefully examined prior to anesthesia and a specific anesthetic protocol is devised that is tailored to your pet. At Northwood Animal Hospital, pain management is a vital part of all surgeries. The medications we choose will keep your pet’s discomfort to a minimum, improve the safety of the anesthetic period, and speed recovery and healing in the post-operative phase.

Leptospirosis Treatment
We tailor the vaccine needs of your pet based on their lifestyle. When you come for your appointment, you will be asked a series of questions relating to where your pet spends most of their time and who they spend it with. Based on your answers to those questions and in consultation with you, the doctor will customize a vaccine protocol for your pet. We do recommend the core vaccines for all pets unless they are medically unwell (DA2PP for dogs; FVRCP for cats, and Rabies vaccines for both, even if they spend all of their time indoors). Some pets need non-core vaccines depending on their risk of exposure to the diseases for which the vaccines protect (Bordetella, Leptospirosis, and Canine Influenza for dogs, Feline Leukemia in cats). We recognize the three-year length of protection for many of our vaccine boosters in adult pets (DA2PP, FVRCP, and Canine Rabies). Vaccines such as FeLV, Bordetella, and Leptospirosis are given yearly for susceptible pets.
Ear Infection Treatment
We have used laser for many medical conditions, including arthritis pain, degenerative joint and disc diseases, hip dysplasia, wound healing, non-resolving ear infections, and burns, to name a few.

This machine monitors heart and respiratory rate, ECG, oxygenation saturation readings, blood pressure, end-tidal CO2, and core body temperature. These measures help ensure the safest anesthetic procedure available for your pet.
Cancer Treatment
When a tumor is found, we will often recommend surgical removal and histopathology (biopsy) to help identify the type of mass. If malignant cancer is diagnosed, we can then consult with veterinary oncologists and provide chemotherapy options at our facility or refer you to a specialist, depending on the case.

Wound and Fracture Care
In addition to soft tissue surgery (wound or laceration repair, abdominal exploratory, cystotomy, splenectomy, biopsies, etc.) we also offer many advanced orthopedic surgeries (fracture repair, patella luxation repair, cranial cruciate repair, osteotomies, hip surgery, etc) and exotic animal procedures.

Dental Surgery
Most pets, even with those requiring oral surgery, will typically be discharged the same day. Your pet’s doctor will give you specific details on home care to follow in the event of any of the above. We typically advise a small meal the night after any oral procedure. Softening of food with water or feeding a canned diet can be especially helpful if the patient had severe gingivitis or extractions performed.
Veterinary Surgery
These CARE animals are brought in as strays or are surrendered by their owners who can no longer care for them. All CARE animals receive any treatment, surgery, and rehabilitation they need until they are healthy enough to be adopted into their forever homes. This can include anything from orthopedic or soft tissue surgery to severe dermatological problems!

We advise that all pets (dogs, cats, and rabbits) be castrated or spayed unless intended for breeding purposes. It is recommended in most cases that the surgery occurs between 4 and 6 months of age. Surgical neutering helps prevent some unwanted behavioral problems (aggression, wandering, marking). It also prevents some types of cancer (breast cancer and reproductive cancers) as well as preventing some other life-threatening conditions (pyometra, dystocia, and prostatic disease).

Dental Radiology
Natalie is from Miami, Florida, and has been a veterinary technician at Northwood since 2019. She really likes being a surgical technician as well as triaging urgent care and emergencies. Her favorite species to treat and handle at Northwood are reptiles, especially snakes. She has continuing education certificates in triage, hematology, dental radiology, and dental prophylaxis. At home, she has a domestic shorthair tuxedo cat and a Malinois pitbull mix. While not at the hospital, she likes to go hiking, camping, running, and going to the beach. Natalie is currently pursuing her bachelor’s degree in Biology at Florida State University.

Senior Pet Care
Northwood Animal Hospital recommends Wellness Screening for dogs and cats over the age of 7 years. In addition to the regular lab work needed for all ages (heartworm testing, fecal floatation) we recommend running full general health panels for senior pets. This more extensive lab work varies from pet to pet depending on their needs. Included in most panels are a CBC (complete blood count to evaluate cells in the blood), a chemistry panel to check organ function, thyroid screening and urinalysis.
