They practice good medicine he...

They practice good medicine here, but check your bill very carefully before paying it. They have tried to charge me for services that weren't done to my horse several times and I had to call in several times over the course of a month before it was fixed. The office staff was also very rude to me on the phone, blaming the issue on me when I wasn't even the client who called them out in the first place.

Dental Care

Veterinary Ophthalmology
For complicated cases we have a consultant relationship with Dr. Robert Lorocca, a board certified ophthalmologist who provides ophthalmological care and surgical treatment. Equine ophthalmology patients are scheduled by contacting Dr. Larocca’s office at Animal Eye Specialty Center. The specific location of the appointment will be determined based upon referring veterinarian request, location, and scheduling availability.
Nutritional Counseling
Problems may arise as the teeth wear. The teeth are slightly off set which can lead to the outside of the upper teeth and the inside of the lower teeth developing sharp ridges. Every horses’ teeth align somewhat differently, and when this alignment is uneven, ramps and hooks can arise as the teeth erupt. These changes, if not addressed, often lead to problems chewing and processing food and even weight loss. Improperly chewed feed can lead to choke and colic. Furthermore any of the above mentioned, ridges, ramps, and hooks may affect your horse’s response to the bit.
Comprehensive Examination
On ambulatory, the intern will ride along with the four other doctors at the practice. The interns will assist and observe routine reproductive work, neonatal evaluation and medicine, basic lameness exams, radiology, and pre-purchase exams. They will also rotate emergency on-call duty.

Illness Treatment

Parasites Treatment and Control
Many of you are now familiar with the concept of strategic deworming that relies on fecal egg counts to identify which horses are high-shedders and are responsible for the majority of parasite transmission. The goal of this deworming strategy is not to completely eliminate all parasites from every horse, but to maintain the health of all horses and reduce environmental contamination of parasite eggs and larvae. The American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) continues to recommend this approach for parasite control as it targets the horses that need deworming the most and helps to prevent further resistance to our current deworming medications. This is of concern as there does not appear to be any new classes of dewormers coming out for horses in the near future. Only 20% of horses within a herd are responsible for the majority of the parasite shedding. By targeting these horses, it can help reduce the number of deworming treatments required for the low-shedders of the herd, thereby reducing the exposure of the parasites to the deworming medications. The less the parasites are exposed to the dewormer, the less likely they are to develop resistance.

Using our one meter Endoscope we are able to visualize the upper respiratory system including the sinuses, guttural pouches and larynx. This allows for early recognition and treatment of many respiratory diseases.
Injury Treatment
There is much we still do not understand about acupuncture and its effects, but we do know that acupuncture can be useful in many conditions. The most common conditions treated in veterinary medicine are neurological and musculoskeletal problems such as paralysis, arthritis, muscle injuries and vertebral disk disease. Acupuncture can also be beneficial in gastrointestinal diseases (such as non-surgical colic, respiratory diseases (such as heaves), and some reproductive disorders.

Dr. Jackie Levendusky received her veterinary degree from Michigan State University in 2021. She was then an intern at SEVC from 2021-2022 and is now a full-time associate veterinarian. She grew up in Minnesota riding and showing western horses in the Arabian circuit, which she still loves to do in her free time. Her special interests include internal medicine, reproduction, and wound care.

The diagnosis of PPID is made by consideration of the clinical signs, age of the horse, and laboratory testing. There are numerous laboratory tests including measurement of adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) and/or the dexamethasone suppression test.

Our capabilities include endoscopy, gastroscopy, digital radiography, and digital utrasonography with color-flow Doppler. Our digital equipment allows us to forward images electronically to referral doctors for updates and specialists for timely second opinions.
