The lung screening, offered year-round at our facility, is recommended for current or former smokers between the ages of 50 and 77. A physician order is required so speak to your primary care physician about this screening which is covered by most insurances.

Urology
Brachytherapy is often used to treat prostate and gynecologic malignancies. The radiation oncologist travels to the Siouxland Urology office to perform this procedure for prostate cancer patients, increasing patient convenience.
Testicular Cancer

Ovarian Cancer
There are several reasons your doctor may have recommended a genetic counseling session. Approximately 5-10% of cancers have been linked to an inherited gene, higher in some specific types of cancer like ovarian cancer at 20%. Genetic testing will then help you and your physicians make medical decisions to proactively take steps to prevent or lower your cancer risk and complete appropriate screening to detect cancer early.

Radiation Therapy
Radiation therapy uses high energy x-rays to destroy cancer cells and shrink tumors. About half of all cancer patients receive radiation therapy as part of their cancer treatment.

Joint Replacement
Radiation can also be used to prevent bone growth after joint replacement surgery when needed. Called heterotropic therapy, the radiation oncologist collaborates with your orthopedic surgeon post-surgery for the single treatment.

Skin Cancer
Jessie Poskochil is a licensed and certified genetic counselor at the Munroe-Meyer Institute in the Genetic Medicine Department within the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Jessie joined as a genetic counselor focused on hereditary cancer genetics in 2021 and has special interests in hereditary melanoma, outreach clinics, and teaching. Currently, Jessie provides cancer genetic counseling and testing services at the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center and the June E. Nylen Cancer Center.
Lesions
We also very recently upgraded our positron emission tomography (PET) scanner to the most advanced model on the market. It integrates a high-performance PET and 64-slice computed tomography (CT) into one machine and shows the highest possible resolution for each organ. Accurate staging of cancer requires early detection of even small lesions and the combination of PET and CT is important because it allows for a more accurate diagnosis of disease than either CT or PET alone.

LIVESTRONG PROGRAM: You want to reclaim your health, but where to start? This program can help by fulfilling the important need of supporting the increasing number of cancer survivors who find themselves in the transitional period between completing their cancer treatment and the shift to feeling physically and emotionally strong enough to attempt to return to their normal life. The program is conducted outside of medical facilities to emphasize that LIVESTRONG is about health, not a disease. This twelve-week, small group program is offered in Siouxland at the Norm Waitt Sr. YMCA. Learn more about LIVESTRONG at the YMCA that is specifically designed for cancer survivors and patients following the American College of Sports Medicine and American Cancer Society exercise guidelines.
