Maricela graduated from Maric College in California as a certified medical assistant in 2006 and began her career in family practice. After having her daughter in 2017, she decided to try something new and joined Affiliated Dermatology as a medical assistant at the Gilbert location. Then she transferred to our Scottsdale location after a few months and was able to strengthen her skills in a fast-paced environment where she became a lead medical assistant. In 2020, Maricela took on the role of operations supervisor where she discovered a passion for leadership. This journey continued in February 2021 when Maricela accepted a Regional Operations Manager role in the East Valley. She truly enjoys making people smile and helping anyone who is in need.

Cataracts
Tanning Beds/Booths: According to the American Academy of Dermatology and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, ultraviolet (UV) radiation from tanning beds, tanning booths, and sun lamps are known carcinogens (cancer-causing substances). Exposure to UV radiation during indoor tanning has been proven to increase the risk of all skin cancers, including melanomas, squamous cell carcinomas, and basal cell carcinomas. In fact, the risk of melanoma increases by 75 percent when indoor tanning devices are used before the age of 30. The UV radiation during indoor tanning also leads to skin aging, hyper- and hypopigmentation, immune suppression and eye damage, such as cataracts. Therefore, the use of tanning beds, tanning booths, and sun lamps is not recommended by dermatologists.

Acne in teenagers is caused by the hormone testosterone, which increases during puberty and stimulates sebaceous glands of the skin to grow, make oil and plug pores. In adults, acne may be related to hormones, stress, childbirth, menopause, or medications. Diet, specifically certain dairy products and high-glycemic-index foods may exacerbate acne in some patients.

Dr. Richard L. Averitte, Jr. is the founder and CEO of Affiliated Dermatology, which was established in July of 2002. He received his undergraduate degree from The Ohio University and his medical degree from the University of Toledo Medical Center. He completed his internship in Internal Medicine at Summa Health System and his Dermatology Residency at Case Western Reserve, University Hospitals of Cleveland. He also served as a Chief Resident.

Eczema is a general term used to describe an inflammation of the skin. In fact, eczema is a series of chronic skin conditions that produce itchy rashes; scaly, dry and leathery areas; skin redness; or inflammation around blisters. Characterized by itchy, inflamed patches of red scaly skin, eczema can be located anywhere on the body, but most frequently appears in the creases on the face, arms and legs.
Lesions
Actinic Keratoses are precancerous skin lesions that may progress into squamous cell carcinomas. They usually occur in fair-skinned individuals after years of sun exposure. Typical actinic keratoses are characterized by rough dry lesions or patches that appear on sun-exposed areas of the skin, such as the shoulders, forehead, ears, neck, arms, hands, lower lip and bald scalps. The lesions may be red, pink, gray or skin color that are more easily felt than seen. Lesions often begin as flat, scaly areas and develop into a rough-textured surface.
Chemical Peels
If you have melasma, the most important part of treatment is a daily sunscreen that protects against UVA and UVB with an SPF of 30 or higher. Irritating skin products should be stopped and alternatives to birth control pills should be considered. The mainstay of topical treatment is with bleaching creams that contain hydroquinone or with compound products that also include a mild corticosteroid and a retinoid. In some patients, chemical peels and topical creams may be recommended to accelerate improvement. It is important to remember that even minimal exposure to ultraviolet light can cause melasma to recur.
