Primary Care
If your primary care doctor requests it, your hospitalist will take charge of your hospital care. He or she will regularly update your primary care doctor about your health, progress, and any significant findings. Your hospitalist will work with your primary care doctor to prepare a treatment plan at the time of admission. When you leave the hospital, your hospitalist will inform your primary care doctor of any further treatment needs, follow-up care, and necessary prescriptions.
Ear Infections
Myringotomy (ear tube placement) —This procedure treats ear infections by placing a small tube in the center of the eardrum to drain fluid and ventilate the area.
Family Practice
Hospitalists are internal medicine or family medicine physicians who specialize in caring for people in the hospital. They do not have outpatient practices. The hospitalists team at Memorial Health University Medical Center includes nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and a clinical support team.

Bladder Cancer
Cystourethroscopy —This diagnostic procedure uses a cytoscope, an endoscopic surgical tool, to examine the bladder and urinary tract. The surgeon looks for abnormal tissue, obstructions, tumors and stones. Sometimes, samples of bladder tissue may be removed to check for bladder cancer.
Ovarian Cancer
This first step after an ovarian cancer diagnosis is to asses the stage and spread of the cancer. Treatment involves removing the ovaries and other surrounding tissues.
Cervical Cancer
An abnormal Pap smear result does not necessarily mean that a woman has cervical cancer. It does suggest that a woman may have an infection or pre-cancerous lesion. Following an abnormal result, a doctor may prescribe antibiotics, repeat the test or move directly to a colposcopic evaluation (close evaluation of the cervix).

Dr. Barnes provides advanced surgical care for a variety of conditions, including, but not limited to, acid reflux, hernias (hiatal, ventral, and inguinal), gallbladder disease as well as colon cancer and esophageal cancer. He leverages technologically advanced minimally invasive techniques to support the care and recovery of his patients.

Prostatectomy —We offer partial and total prostatectomy surgery. During this procedure, all or part of the prostate gland is removed. A prostatectomy may be an option to treat prostate cancer.

Diabetic Retinopathy
Pars plana vitrectomy —This is an outpatient procedure to remove the clouded vitreous (clear, jelly-like substance) in the eye and replace it with a salt solution to enhance vision. It can be beneficial in treating diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment and holes in the retina.

Ultrasound
Echocardiogram (echo) —An echo is a specialized ultrasound that creates images of the heart and its movements. Doctors are able to see the heart in action and evaluate proper pumping function and structure. For more advanced imaging needs, a transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) can be performed by inserting a probe down the esophagus.
Radiology
The child life internship experience consists of 600 hours of clinical time completed within a children’s hospital (A 16-week commitment at 40 hours a week). Child life internships are available during the winter/spring and fall semesters. Clinical rotations for the internship may include experiences within the following areas: general inpatient, hematology/ oncology, pediatric intensive care, surgery center, radiology, and outpatient services.

Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy is often recommended after surgery for patients, except those with very early stage ovarian cancer. Chemotherapy treatment cycles are typically three to four weeks. It is recommended for most patients to receive six to eight cycles.
Radiation Therapy
Screening for breast cancer is a vital part of every women's healthcare plan. We perform 3D mammograms to help identify signs of breast cancer early, when it is most treatable. If you receive a breast cancer diagnosis, we are here with surgical treatments and specialized radiation therapy.

Dr. Barnes hails from St. Louis, MO, and obtained his medical degree from the University College Dublin in Ireland. Upon completing his dual residency at Vanderbilt University Hospital and the Carolinas Medical Center, Dr. Barnes pursued a Mastery of General Surgery fellowship in Savannah. Prior to joining Memorial Health, he was a member of a large surgical group in Savannah.
