As part of the initial assessment, a qualified mental health professional or child and adolescent psychiatrist will determine the need for psychotherapy. This decision will be based on such things as the child's current problems, history, level of development, ability to cooperate with treatment, and what interventions are most likely to help with the presenting concerns. Psychotherapy is often used in combination with other treatments (medication, behavior management, or work with the school). The relationship that develops between the therapist and the patient is very important. The child or adolescent must feel comfortable, safe and understood. This type of trusting environment makes it much easier for the child to express his/her thoughts and feelings and to use the therapy in a helpful way.
Psychiatry
Kevin Pertchik, Ph.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist who specializes in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with adults and geriatric populations. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland, a master's degree from Columbia University in Developmental Psychology, and a second master's degree and doctoral degree in clinical psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology in Fresno. He completed a pre-doctoral internship through Harvard University, Department of Psychiatry and postdoctoral training in Geropsychology at Boston University. In addition to teaching at Sage Graduate School, he has presented at several national conferences on topics related to psychology and aging and personality assessment. For two years he was the director of Samaritan Hospital's 20-bed Inpatient Geropsychiatry Unit. Currently, Dr. Pertchik provides clinical consultation to nursing homes in Albany and Saratoga counties through RG Psychological Services. He practices part-time at the Saratoga and Colonie offices where he focuses on the Cognitive Behavioral Treatment of anxiety and mood disorders, couples counseling, and psychological testing. Dr. Pertchik sees patients in Albany and Saratoga Springs.
Behavioral Health
Dr. Drum received his doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University at Albany in 1981. He worked for several years at the Capital District Psychiatric Center, where he specialized in Psychiatric Rehabilitation, and founded and directed the Life Goals Recovery Program. He was also a Clinical Associate Professor at the Albany Medical College, where he taught and supervised psychiatry residents and psychology interns. Dr. Drum has been in full-time private practice since 1995. He specializes in the treatment of Anxiety and Depressive Disorders, as well as in work with couples. Other areas of interest include behavior change strategies and the behavioral health needs of senior citizens. Dr. Drum sees patients in Albany and Saratoga Springs.
