Bob's Almaden Transmissions and Automotive Repair has earned my trust, gratitude and this very positive review for the following scenario. After 173,000 miles the 5-speed manual transmission in my 1991 Toyota pickup developed and exhibited very stiff, balky and indefinite shifter action (which caused too many missed, gear-grinding shifts). Periodically and unpredictably it also would jump out of gear when decelerating. The first transmission repair shop I visited (a highly rated business with good reviews) recommended a transmission rebuild kit, including synchromesh, bearings and seals) to resolve the problem. The estimate was $865 and the job took 3-4 days. I believe the diagnosis was well-intentioned and the cost seemed reasonable.

The second transmission shop I visited (Bob's Almaden Transmissions) immediately and insightfully diagnosed the problem as a bad shifter bushing. Because of the frequency of this problem Bob kept a supply of bushings on hand and offered to install it immediately, without an appointment, for a cost of $45. Bingo! In 30 minutes the job was completed and I was back on the road and enjoying the feel of a like-new gearbox.
