Obstetrics
I then went on to obtain a medical degree from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. My experiences there led me to become passionate about women’s health and surgery. This led to my decision to pursue residency training in Obstetrics & Gynecology at the LAC+USC Medical Center. I then completed subspecialty training in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery at Kaiser East Bay – University of California San Francisco. I aim to guide my patients through a holistic and integrative approach to the management of pelvic floor disorders. Our team offers cutting-edge, surgical and non-surgical options for the management of these disorders in order to restore and improve your quality of life.
Endometriosis
Previous surgery, radiation therapy, infection and endometriosis can often cause significant scarring or adhesions in the pelvic tissues making pelvic surgery more complex. Injury to surrounding anatomic structures is a more common complication when there is scarring present. Surgeons need specialty training and should have experience in performing these more challenging surgeries to minimize the risks of damage to surrounding tissue.

Urology
Reconstructive urology surgery can help patients with conditions such as birth defects, cancer, neurological disorders, female incontinence, strictures, scar tissue in the urinary tract organs, and pelvic floor prolapse including cystocele, rectocele, enterocele, and uterine decensus.
Ovarian Cancer
We are a study site for InterVenn Ovarian Cancer Liquid Biopsy (VOCAL). Venn Biosciences Corporation (“InterVenn”) has developed a liquid biopsy that is capable of distinguishing benign from malignant masses in women presenting with adnexal (pelvic) masses, through a simple blood test. The underlying technology combines mass spectrometry and artificial intelligence/machine learning to analyze tumor-associated changes in circulating glycoproteins. The purpose of this study is to prospectively collect de-identified biological samples and data from women with a known pelvic mass, to validate ovarian cancer specific glycoproteomic signatures in the blood based on histologically confirmed malignancy status of the mass.

Chemotherapy
Novel, FDA-approved treatment for recurrent gynecologic cancer, in which all visible tumor is resected and the abdominal cavity is perfused with heated chemotherapy to enhance tumor kill and chemotherapy effect. We have provided HIPEC services under clinical trial setting since 2006, and were the first in the state of California.
Radiation Therapy
When an operation for cancer or pre cancer is required, I try to incorporate minimally invasive techniques (vaginal, laparoscopic, or robotic) to minimize the recovery time and discomfort for patients and their families. I perform hundreds of these procedures every year. If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with a gynecologic cancer, you may already know the multiple treatment options—surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, hyperthermia—that are often needed. I am honored to help you navigate a sometimes confusing and frustrating road to health.

General Surgery
Bay Area Gynecology Oncology specializes in pelvic surgery, vaginal surgery, laparotomy, and other surgical services throughout San Jose, Fremont, Santa Cruz, Los Gatos, Mountain View, Salinas, Carmel, and surrounding CA communities.
Minimally Invasive Surgery
A native of Northern California, Dr. Volpe was drawn to the service mission of Gonzaga University in Spokane, WA and stayed in the Northwest to attend medical school at Oregon Health and Science University before making her way back to the sunshine. Her interests include minimally invasive surgery and she is active in health equity research.
Robotic Surgery
Robotic surgery isn’t an option for everyone. Talk with your doctor about the benefits and risks of robotic surgery and how it compares with other techniques, such as other types of minimally invasive surgery and conventional open surgery.
Hysterectomy
With a vaginal hysterectomy, the surgeon makes an incision inside and near the top of the vagina. The surgeon then reaches through this incision to cut and tie off the ligaments, blood vessels, and fallopian tubes. Once the uterus is cut free, it is removed through the vagina. The procedure normally takes one to two hours. Often, the patient can go home the same day return to normal activities takes about one to two weeks.
Laparoscopy
Laparoscopy is performed under general anesthetic, so you will be unconscious throughout the procedure and have no memory of it. You can often go home on the same day.
Reconstructive Surgery
Dr. Katherine Volpe specializes in disorders of the female pelvic floor. She is a fellowship trained Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery specialist and a board certified gynecologist.
