Leptospirosis TreatmentLeptospirosis is on a comeback and is being reported more frequently in the Bay Area. Pleae talk to your veterinarian about the advantages and disadvantages of vaccinating your dog against this disease.
Parvovirus Infection TreatmentYour puppy will come in every 3-4 weeks for 3-5 more visits and will receive a different vaccine combination at each visit. At the end of the programs, your puppy will have been checked twice for worms, and will be vaccinated for Distemper, Parvovirus, Rabies, Bordetella (“Kennel Cough”) and 4 other common infectious diseases.
Feline Retro Virus TreatmentYour kitten will come in every 3-4 weeks for 3-5 more visits and will receive a different vaccine combination at each visit. At the end of both programs, your kitten will have been blood tested for Feline Leukemia virus and Feline Immunodeficiency virus, and vaccinated for contagious diseases including Distemper, three upper respiratory diseases, Rabies and Feline Leukemia.
Bacterial and Viral Infection TreatmentThe dog’s response to the intense itching is to chew, lick, or scratch. This causes hair loss and can lead to open sores or scabs on the skin, allowing a secondary bacterial infection to begin. The area most commonly involved is over the rump (just in front of the tail). This is probably because fleas find this part of the dog more desirable. Many flea-allergic dogs also chew or lick the hair off of their legs.

Veterinary OphthalmologyA Glaucoma Check measures the pressure inside the eye. This allows for early detection of glaucoma, which if undiscovered, leads to irreversible blindness.
Nutritional CounselingDogs with large bowel diarrhea pass a smaller volume of feces each time, but defecate more frequently, about four times a day. There may be minimal to no weight loss, but there can be hematochezia and mucus with occasional dyschezia and tenesmus, and an urgency to defecate. Vomiting is uncommon.

Dental CareThe same anesthetics that allow complicated surgeries such as heart and kidney transplants to be done on humans are used in pets as well. Even very frail animals can usually be anesthetized safely. In general, the risks from NOT performing a needed procedure, such as dental cleaning or tumor removal, are much higher than the risk from the anesthesia.
VaccinationYes. Vaccinations help protect your pet from a number of potentially serious and even fatal diseases, such as Rabies. Not only that, vaccinations cost considerably less than the treatments available for the diseases pets are normally vaccinated against. Every pet should be vaccinated - even indoor dogs and cats can be exposed to a rabid bat.
Lab and X-Rays
Laboratory ServicesFIV and FeLV are manageable if detected early. Your cat can be tested for both diseases with one blood test. And it only takes 10 minutes.
X-RayWe use pre-operative blood tests and radiographs (X-rays) if indicated to help us determine whether a procedure will be safe for your pet before it is performed. We require pre-operative blood screening for all pets over the age of seven years before anesthesia is administered. We strongly encourage owners of younger animals to have their pet’s blood tested as well. Even young and apparently healthy animals can have serious organ dysfunctions that are not evident without such testing. Chest X-rays are taken if there is any suspicion of heart or lung disease, or cancer.
Chronic Condition Treatment
Cancer TreatmentOne of the devastating diagnoses a pet owner can receive is that their pet has cancer. We have special interest and expertise in administering Chemotherapy to pets. We are devoted to providing comprehensive cancer care for companion animals (dogs, cats, ferrets, etc.) through a partnership with board-certified specialists in Oncology.
Hip Dysplasia TreatmentRadiographs can be taken to assess for hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, arthritis or other medical conditions. When pets are sedated or anesthetized we can easily take X-rays that would otherwise be impossible.
Diabetes TreatmentDescription - Diabetes mellitus is characterized by high concentrations of glucose in the blood and in the urine. The disease usually results from either decreased production of insulin by the pancreas, or impaired insulin function within the body tissues. With either problem, the dog’s system becomes unable to regulate the glucose that is circulating in the bloodstream. If the condition is left undiagnosed and untreated, it can progress to severe illness and possibly death. However, diabetes mellitus sometimes can be reversible when noted in the intact female dog.
Thyroid Disease TreatmentAn important part of the evaluation of the patient is the identification of underlying disease. Many dogs with chronic or recurrent ear infections have allergy problems or low thyroid function (hypothyroidism). If underlying disease is found, it must be diagnosed and treated, if at all possible. If this cannot be done, the dog is less likely to have a favorable response to treatment. Also, the dog might respond temporarily, but the infection will relapse at a later time (usually when ear medication is discontinued).
Knee Problems Treatment
Heart Disease TreatmentAlso, we have an anesthetist nurse in the room monitoring anesthesia. She monitors oxygen flow and anesthetic settings on the precision vaporizer, along with heart rate, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, heart rhythm, blood pressure, and temperature. During anesthesia several monitors are used to track our patients’ vital signs. An EKG records electrical activity of the heart. A Pulse-Oximeter monitors oxygen content of the blood and heart rate. An Apnea Monitor tracks respiration rate.
Kidney Disease TreatmentAn infected dog becomes less active and tires easily. Coughing, weight loss, chronic fatigue and fainting may appear in advanced disease stages. Adult heartworms are found in the heart, lungs and major blood vessels. Secondary liver and kidney disease may result. Heartworms can grow from 5 to 14 inches long. In advanced cases, a hundred or more worms have been found in a single heart.

Behavioral Disorder Treatment
Pain ManagementSpay and neuter surgical procedures are done under general anesthesia and pain relief medications are given for home. Most pets are walking out of the hospital and have all normal functions afterwards.
Skin Condition and Allergy TreatmentMost cats that go outdoors sooner or later pick up fleas. Many cats develop allergies to fleas and have severe skin problems as a result. Fleas also carry tapeworms and a serious blood parasite. It is far safer for your cat to prevent fleas than to risk these diseases.
Upper Respiratory Illness TreatmentOne of the most common conditions affecting dogs is allergy. In the allergic state, the dog's immune system "overreacts" to foreign substances (allergens or antigens) to which it is exposed. These overreactions are manifested in three ways. The most common is itching of the skin, either localized (one area) or generalized (all over the dog). Another manifestation involves the respiratory system and may result in coughing, sneezing, and/or wheezing. Sometimes, there may be an associated nasal or ocular (eye) discharge. The third manifestation involves the digestive system, resulting in vomiting or diarrhea. The specific response that occurs is related to the type of allergy present.

Laser SurgeryWe recommend pain medications for your pet. Studies show that pet's who receive pain medications recover much more quickly then pet's who don't. They also are less likely to self-mutilate their incision site and are happier postoperatively. Pets do not show their pain by nature, so they are counting on you to learn about this. The small cost is well worth it and will result in much better recovery. In addition, a new modality that has recently surfaced in Veterinary Medicine is Laser Surgery. Laser Surgery has resulted in decreased pain perception postoperatively. Please ask your AAH staff member or Veterinarian for more information.
