Established in 1921, The San Francisco Public Defender s Office provides legal representation to more than 25,000 people charged with crimes annually. The office offers a variety of defense services and programs to provide criminal justice. It administers the Children of Incarcerated Parents, which helps to promote healthy relationships between children and their incarcerated parents by providing emergency housing, urgent child care, family court hearing and counseling services. The San Francisco Public Defender s Office has received the Dorsey Award from the American Bar Association. It operates felony, misdemeanor, mental health and specialty court units. The office also operates a juvenile division that provides support to youthful clients to help them avoid entering the adult criminal justice system. The San Francisco Public Defender s Office is a part of the city and county of San Francisco in California.
