AF is an amazing shelter with a huge heart, All they want to do is help San Antonio's staggering number of stray animals. They do their best to keep it going from day to day. Its alot of work. The animals are precious and get everything they need. Don't listen to the negative reviews about the shelter. So what if they don't pick up the phone when it rings every time, they are very busy! They work day in and day out to care for these animals. Its a hard and tiring job that someone has got to do Trust me, if you worked as hard as everyone does at AF, you would understand why it might be hard to read these negative reviews when they are honestly trying their best. The applications are read carefully to make sure the animal will not end up on the streets again! As a no-kill shelter they take in all sorts of animals (abused, neglected, behavior problems), so they want to make sure they cycle doesn't start over again with a new owner. In my opinion, they are being very responsible human beings for carefully considering to whom the animal will go to. If you aren't satisfied with the shelter, then I encourage you to take the initiative to get up there and see how hard they work. Donations are *much* appreciated. Again, they are a not for profit organization that receives NO city funding. God bess those who volunteer their time to help instead of sitting at the computer complaining.

I have adopted both a dog and a cat from this shelter. I have also volunteered and donated food, money and supplies for the last two years. Cheryl is an angel to these animals. She works very hard to supply the very best for these animals which is extremely hard in these times when both donations and supplies are hard to come by. This shelter is also a sanctuary for some of the animals that will never find a forever home due to behavior, health or emotional problems. For them this shelter is their forever home. The employees, volunteers and supporters of this shelter know the truth about the care and love that these animals get. Cheryl knows each and every animal very well and is very careful about wanting to place them with the right family so that they will not be returned to the shelter and she has been critized alot about this. All responsible shelters should monitor who adopts their animals so that the best possible outcome is established. Not all are good fits, but there are many wonderful dogs and cats at this shelter that would make wonderful additions to someone's family. Please consider Animal Friends when looking for a new pet for your family.

I adopted two dogs from this shelter. However, I would not recommend that anyone support this organization. There are dogs in that place that have been there 4+ years because Saint Cheryl knows best and won't let them go. They have untreated health problems, severe behavioral issues and many (including one of the ones I ended up with) are unadoptable by most reasonable standards. Animal Friends Humane Society is run by hoarders who will make any excuse they can think of not to adopt out animals. There are more animals on the property than the limited staff are physically able to care for and they continue to collect, at the same time driving away anyone who actually tries to help. They keep animals hidden, only accepting visits by appointment and rarely answering phones or responding to messages. The nonprofit board is a scam, comprised of the land owner, the director, her mother, brother and a friend of the family. It is a shame the IRS hasn't suspended their tax-exempt status for this alone, nevermind the blatant neglect of the animals and mismanagement of funds. No doubt that those operating this organization THINK they are doing what is best for animals they love, but these people have a serious mental condition. Hoarders may have the best of intentions, but that is meaningless when animals are left to suffer for their entire lives in dirty cages without knowing the love of a family or a home.

Animal Friends does not have an enormous list of donors. It is a small shelter in the country. The animals are NOT "thrown over the fence". They are in shade-covered enclosures until there is room in the buildings. Cheryl - the guiding light - dearly loves all of her abandoned charges . So "Mikey" - how about making another visit to ANIMAL FRIENDS to learn the true story about this beloved shelter and its guardian angel named Cheryl.

I adopted a wonderful dog from this facility this past weekend. I've read some reviews that were not favorable - and I disagree!!! No, it is not the Ritz Carlton for unwanted animals. However, these animals are loved and well taken care of by Cheryl and her volunteers. Are they over crowded? YES. Do they need donations? YES! Do we realize that this is a non-profit organization? I don't think so. If we did, we might be a little more understanding regarding returned phone calls, hours of operation, etc.\r \r My Sophie is fabulous. She received all her shots, was spayed and micro chipped. No fleas, ticks, kennel cough, etc.\r \r I went to all the other shelters in S.A. Yes, they are state of the art, closer than Borgfeld Rd. The only person that spoke to me in EVERY ONE of those places was at the front desk when I entered. No one else.\r \r I have nothing but good things to say about Paula and Cheryl at Animal Friends. If you would like to help make things better there, how bout you step up to the plate and volunteer or better yet donate some money.\r \r KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK PAUL, CHERYL AND VOLUNTEERS!!!!! YOU ROCK!!!
