Sleep Disorders

At Redwood Pulmonary Medical Associates, our sleep specialists will evaluate your sleep patterns to determine the source of your sleep problem and make a diagnosis. One of the best tests for detecting a sleep disorder is the overnight sleep study, or polysomnography. A sleep study measures your sleep cycles and stages, as well as heart rhythms, breathing patterns, and leg movements. You spend the night in a comfortable but sleep laboratory environment, monitored by registered sleep study technicians.

Leah grew up in Northeastern Ohio, where she still lives, and is a Board-Certified Physician Assistant through the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). She received her Bachelor’s degree in neuroscience from Kenyon College and Master of Medical Science and PA Studies from Baldwin Wallace University. Before joining Redwood Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine Associates/Somnology Medical Group, Leah worked for several years in ophthalmology and vitreoretinal surgery at Retina Associates of Cleveland. Leah sees patients with a wide range of sleep and pulmonary disorders, including obstructive sleep apnea, insomnia, restless leg syndrome, narcolepsy, asthma, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). When she is not seeing patients, she enjoys spending time with her husband, two children, and dog.

Melissa started Redwood Pulmonary Medical Associates (RPMA), now Redwood Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine Associates/Somology Medical Group, in January 2002 as a solo practitioner specializing in Pulmonary Medicine, Critical Care, and Sleep Disorders. She went to medical school at the Ohio State University College of Medicine, completed her residency in Internal Medicine at Boston City Hospital/Boston University, completed fellowships in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospitals and the University of California, San Francisco, where she spent several rewarding years prior to private practice in the Cardiovascular Research Institute and Thoracic Oncology Program conducting research in lung cancer. The offices of RPMA are located inside Sequoia Hospital, where most of our patients receive hospital and outpatient services, including in-lab sleep studies. Seeing that the demand for sleep consultations far outweighed the number of available providers, she co-founded and launched Somnology, Inc. in 2015, which integrates mobile technology and virtual care on a software platform to provide sleep care nationally. Melissa grew up near Akon, Ohio and holds onto her mid-Western sensibilities. She loves to find creative solutions to problems large and small, and enjoys teaching, listening to her patients’ stories, and mentoring. When she is not working, she likes to hike, follow baseball, practice Filipino martial arts, listen to music, cook (especially dishes her mom used to make), and spend time with her family.

Michelle is a Bay Area native and grew up in Marin County, CA. She completed her undergraduate training at Stanford University and then attended medical school at the University of California, San Francisco. She completed both her residency in Neurology and fellowship in Sleep Medicine at Stanford University. Michelle is Board Certified in Neurology, Sleep Medicine, Lifestyle Medicine, and Behavioral Sleep Medicine. At Redwood Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine Associates/Somnology Medical Group, she sees patients with the full spectrum of sleep disorders but specializes in Behavioral Sleep Medicine, Circadian Medicine, and Lifestyle Medicine. She uses non-pharmacologic techniques such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and dietary and lifestyle changes to treat insomnia, hypersomnia, restless leg syndrome and other sleep conditions. When she is not seeing patients, she enjoys spending as much time outdoors as possible and exploring the Bay Area with her family.
