Children should have their first orthodontic appointment by age 7 according to the American Association of Orthodontists. At this age, teeth and jaws are still growing but it can be easier to treat certain conditions before development is complete. Permanent teeth may be guided into better positions as they come in, or a palatal expander may be used to help widen the palate so that the upper arch is sized more appropriately. Sometimes partial braces or space maintainers are recommended to prevent tooth crowding, and headgear can be beneficial to correct a misaligned jaw. However, many young patients do not require intervention at all. Dr. Laprade will perform diagnostic tests like X-rays to determine the ideal time for treatment, which may be in the teen years or not at all.

Keep your retainer in the original case when you’re not wearing it. Since the thermoplastic material is sensitive to heat, do not place it near heaters, dishwashers, car dashboards, or anywhere that exceeds 115 degrees Fahrenheit. Don’t place your retainer where pets might damage it. Always clean your retainer before and after wear to help avoid plaque buildup on the porous surfaces. Remove plaque by gently scrubbing with a toothbrush and mild liquid soap, or use a denture cleaning solution like Efferdent. Rinse the retainer well afterwards to eliminate cleanser residue.

Teeth that haven’t yet erupted may be guided into better positions, and space can be preserved for those teeth to come in. Jaw growth can also be guided with early orthodontic treatment, and the child’s bite may be predicted. Some additional benefits of early intervention are regulating the width of the upper and lower dental arches, avoiding future permanent tooth extractions, correcting thumb sucking, reducing the risk for impacted permanent teeth, or avoiding abnormal speech or swallowing issues.
