Finally, nail dystrophy can be a symptom of internal diseases or a side effect of medications. Onychorrhexis is a condition characterized by brittleness of the fingernails and toenails that is the result of overexposure to certain chemicals such as strong soap or acetone (nail polish remover), is a symptoms of anemia, hypothyroidism, eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa or bulimia, or is a side effect of oral retinoids such as isotretinoin (accutane). Treatment of the causative factors should resolve onychorrhexis. Koilonychia is a symptom of iron deficiency and begins as thin nails that break easily. Eventually the nails become flat or may even curve upward. For this reason this condition is also known as spoon nail. Nail dystrophy can also be a side effect of certain chemotheraputic medications.

After you and your provider have chosen IG-SRT, you will be scheduled for a Simulation. This is a 45-minuteappointmentwith your provider and Radiation Therapist to establish treatment parameters. Your initial ultrasound will be taken during this appointment.

One study found it to be beneficial in that it produced higher response rates and overall survival rates than those for surgery alone. Other studies do not demonstrate benefit. Adjuvant chemotherapy and/or biological therapy are also undergoing clinical evaluation. One study demonstrated that high-dose interferon alfa-2b resulted in prolonged relapse-free survival and overall survival compared with no adjuvant therapy. A follow-up study by the same group demonstrated preliminary results indicating high-dose interferon achieved a relapse-free survival benefit over no adjuvant treatment but not over low-dose interferon. Neither high- nor low-dose interferon had a significant overall survival advantage compared with observation alone. High-dose interferon can be associated with significant toxic/adverse effects (ie, liver toxicity), and some patients require dose reduction because it may not be well tolerated.
Radiation Therapy
Low-risk squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) on the trunk and extremities can be treated with electrodessication and curettage (ED&C). For invasive SCC, surgical excision and Mohs micrographic surgery are the primary treatment options; with appropriate patient selection, these techniques have comparable cure rates. Radiation therapy is typically used as an adjuvant to surgery, to provide improved locoregional control, but it may be used as primary therapy in patients who are unable to undergo surgical excision.

Joint Replacement
Unfortunately there is no cure for alkaptonuria â€“ most treatment relies on prevention and treatment of the symptoms listed above. Despite the many potential manifestations of this disease there is no negative impact on life expectancy, though quality of life may be reduced. A low protein diet is thought to help delay development of this disease due to reduced intake of the amino acids tyrosine and phenylalanine – the precursors of homogentisic acid. Some physicians may utilize large doses of vitamin C to slow the conversion of homogentisic acid to benzoquinone acetic acid, though the benefit of this treatment had been disputed. Recent research has revealed that nitisinone, a drug that has been used to treat a different disease involving tyrosine metabolism, can inhibit the conversion of tyrosine to homogentisic acid thus greatly reducing the levels of this particle in the body. The long-term effects of this drug are unknown. Patients with alkaponturia often receive joint replacement surgery to treat their arthritis and heart surgery to correct valve defects. Other manifestations are treated as they arise.

It offers the highest cure rate for difficult-to-treat basal cell cancers. Dr. Jochen is an expert in Mohs surgery and can tell you if Mohs is right for you.

Laser ResurfacingÂ â€“ fractional CO2Â is considered the Gold Standard for several types of scars. This type of laser ablates the top layer of the skin making scars shallow and less defined. Skin Cancer
Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common form of skin cancer. More than two million cases of this skin cancer are diagnosed in the United States each year. This skin cancer usually develops on skin that gets sun exposure, such as on the head, neck, and back of the hands. BCC is especially common on the face, often forming on the nose. It is possible to get BCC on any part of the body, including the trunk, legs, and arms.

An ulcer is an open sore in the skin or mucous membrane that is resistant to healing. This reduced healing is generally due to a decrease in circulation to the area.
Eczema
Shiny pink or red, slightly scaly patch, especially when appears on the trunk. It grows slowly and may be mistaken for a patch of eczema.
Fungus
Unfortunately, onychomycosis is difficult to treat and has a high rate of recurrence. However, it is important to treat nail fungus because, though it may have no initial symptoms besides changes in appearance, this infection will only rarely resolve on its own and can eventually cause permanent damage to the nail and can lead to serious complications. Topical treatments such as efinaconazole and tavaborole have low cure rates and require consistent daily treatment for 48 weeks. They may be effective to treat mild cases, but in more severe cases they cannot penetrate the nail plate and oral therapy or surgical care is required to achieve complete cure. Oral anti-fungal agents such as terbinafine, itraconazole, and fluconazole are much more effective but carry the risk or liver damage. Therefore, it is important to monitor liver status through blood tests during this therapy. Finally, the nail may be treated surgically through the use of laser and light technology or through removal of the infected nail. Oral, topical, and surgical treatments are often combined to increase cure rates. Home remedies are generally unsuccessful.
Lesions
Angiokeratomas are benign vascular skin lesions composed of dilated capillaries. They appear as small, red/blue/black, raised, and rough lesions. They are not painful but may become tender or bleed easily when scratched or irritated. There are many forms of angiokeratoma.

Electrosurgery and curettage: Electrosurgery (burning) is a good treatment for common warts, filiform warts, and foot warts. Curettage involves scraping off (curetting) the wart with a sharp knife or small, spoon-shaped tool. These two procedures often are used together. Dr. JochenÂ may remove the wart by scraping it off before or after electrosurgery.
