They never answer there phones here what a joke ... Then you call ''Julie Banks '' who is the supervisor at 297-3088 and she never answers her phone ... I guess I will call the mayors office then and see what happens ...

RUDE STAFF

My fiancé and I went to adopt a dog this evening from OKC animal shelter. We got there maybe 20 minutes before closing thinking they'd still be opened and willing to help us rescue a dog in need of a good home. I called earlier that day to make sure it was OK for us to bring our current dog in to see if they'd get along and they said it wasn't a problem. So as soon as we walk through the door, a young girl working yells at us saying we just exposed our dog to so many diseases. A little taken back by her rude statement instead of a warm, welcoming greeting, my fiancé steps outside with our puppy. I told her we were wanting to adopt and she got an attitude saying I have 15 minutes to look and there are over 500 dogs so I probably won't get one today. I was just very disappointed with the staff. Everyone was cold. It's obvious their main concern is not to find these innocent animals homes. I hope they are shut down and these animals are sent to a better facility who have a staff with a heart for animals. Not people working for extra cash. After reading other reviews, I see a lot of people have adopted sick animals from here. Probably since as soon as you walk in you're 'exposed to so many diseases'.

Overall

I was pleasantly surprised by this great shelter.

I'm so glad we decided to adopt from here instead of a stuck-up, non-profit pet "rescue" with three pages of rules and 10 times the adoption fee. Seriously, I almost gave up after browsing PetFinder and seeing all the rules put into place for adoptions from private "rescues" around here. Pet rescues, check and see if this applies to you, because a friend of mine ended up adopting from a puppy mill pet shop even after our lectures against it because of the annoying rules, availability, and high price of the private "rescues" around him.

As for the OKC shelter: the prices are reasonable. If the dog is adoptable, this is a no-kill shelter. However, un-adoptable dogs will be euthanized.

We were told that dogs in cages with other dogs would be a good choice for multi-dog situations; dogs kept by themselves needed to be "only children."

I'm also so glad we adopted an adult dog instead of a puppy - ALREADY HOUSEBROKEN. I can't understand why anybody would adopt a puppy when there are well-trained adult dogs available.

Our dog came into the shelter injured, so it's obvious they do put effort into rehabilitation instead of just putting them to sleep if there is a chance for healing and adoption.

The staff members were helpful, friendly, and informative.

When you go to the adopt, the shelter has some nice play rooms where you can take a dog for somealone time. First we had taken out a male dog to play with, but he was more interested in peeing everywhere. We put him back.

Next, against my arguing for "no PIT BULLS," my husband pulled out our girl! The lab mix sharing her cage snuck out and tried to run away. My husband had to grab both of them by their legs, and I was sure he was going to lose his hand to the pit bull, but she just waited patiently.

We took this one to the play room. She ignored all the other dogs and smells and just wanted to cuddle up with us. Needless to say she picked us, and I'm thankful she did.

She's a very well-built pit bull, and we have had people come up to us and ask to breed her. I wish I could turn them all in for animal abuse. It's obvious that she was used by a background breeder, already because she came into the shelter underweight, injured, and freshly having weaned a litter. She probably made her previous owners a good deal of money from their own private puppy mill. But, she has a real home now, thanks to the great OKC animal shelter.

They do a nice job with their website, where they have pictures of many of the available pets. But you really can't tell from a picture. Our girl's picture is so pathetic - she was hiding from the camera, shy and lost. You couldn't even see her face because she was wrapped around the handler's legs, trying to hide and not wanting to be left alone again. To be honest, I remember clicking past her page on their website before we went in, because she had two strikes - pit bull and no good photo. Thank goodness nobody else nabbed her. I pray she lives a long time, and we enjoy every minute with our baby.

-------

There was a board full of missing dog notes, so if your dog goes through this shelter and you don't get matched up, it's your own fault. You should put a note on the board (or they will do it for you if you call in, but obviously a photo is better) and visit the shelter every couple of days to check. That's just how it works, people. Don't lose your dog and then act like it's their problem. At least they picked it up and kept it from being flattened on Penn or ripped apart by a neighborhood stray.

The okc animal shelter is by far means a no kill shelter. They need to be taken off of all no kill lists.

This place in an abomination. ...

This place in an abomination.

Had I known they had a 3-day euthanization policy, I would never have dropped off two lost pets I found on SE 59th. Male Pit, unneutered, fairly aggressive (but loving and well trained nonetheless) so I know he didn't stand a chance, and his little sister, a small pit mix, both collared, no tags. I stopped in to drop them off at approximately 5:50 p.m., in uniform, in a thunderstorm (They "close" at 5:45). Once inside their lobby, I knocked on the window to summon one of the three girls I saw still inside they building. After several minutes, one of them came out and informed me belligerently that she couldn't do anything because "they were closed" as if it was some biblical event that prevented her from being a decent human. During this one of the workers squeezed out the door, asking timidly "can I go?" They refused to take any information about where I found the animals, dry the animals or offer care or food (the male was bleeding from his nose ). After telling her off she and the rest of the people still hid in the back out of sight. Apparently, their staff would be along at 7 AM the next day to collect them from the metal cage in the wall I had to leave them in, and get all pertinent information off the form I filled out and left on the side of their cage.

I know these dogs are in a better place now and I'm ashamed I didn't do more.

Don't make the same mistake I did. This place is pathetic.

God forbid you do your job, especially when its something you volunteer for.

I can only hope their owners searched aggressively for them and found them before this shelter had a chance to provide "care."

these people say one thing and...

these people say one thing and then when the person comes to get a stray cat that someone hit in fromt of my house, she says because I have 3 male cats and counted more strays that I have too many cats. I cannot help if the neighbors cat is in heat and the male cats of the neighborhood like to spray my car tires. I am a Senior Citizen and disabled and can only do so much. What am I to do? Let the poor cat die on her own. That to me is cruel, very cruel.

I'm doing this in desperation hoping it may find dungeons with a good heart willing to help. We have a wonderful dig, Atreyu, we got as a puppy and trained very well. He is now 8 years old and due to a situation that leaves us in between w have had to keep him out in the heat since he is not allowed to be where we are staying. We are concerned for his health and safety and love him dearly. He is an amazing, loving animal but if we can't find already a yello place for him to stay by friday we will have to bring our beautiful furry love to the shelter as we can't jeopardize a home for our children. Out is breaking our hearts. He loves our two young children and has also lived in our house with other dogs and cats. He is the picture perfect dog and he just needs an childminder to open their doors to him to save his life atleast until we can find a stable house. If you have it in your heart to help please vs. our text asap. Thank you and God bless. (504) 342-9807

This shelter is a holocaust. ...

This shelter is a holocaust. They give the animal 3 days on death row. They do not post every animal that comes in. You cannot reach a live perso to talk with. They should have a computer number (which they do number the animal) and description. They should have one person, system to check their site (Pet Harbor) or PetFinder) to make more of an effort to find the owner. You go on their site and they send you to Pet Harbor, you fill out the information, attach a picture of your beloved family member and it is never checked by the shelter. I was told too many animals, not enough staff, so they kill the animal instead. For someone that has lost their pet in the area and lives far away, it is impossible to get there and check every day to check and no one will notify you. You cannot speak to a live person either. It can't be helped if the microchip does not read properly and the animal has slipped their collar. It just amazes me that they ask you to post a description and a picture, yet they NEVER check, it is easier to kill them. I now know that I will never get my beloved Charlie back, even if they have found her.

i can't find a dog to adopt be...

I can't seem to find a dog to adopt because I never can get the websites to show or tell me anything. I have searching for over an hour but all I get is a bunch of worthless advertising / words. maybe a out of state website or two.?. Do they REALLY have the animals well being in mind? NO. Not really.

They make it way to hard. Really irritating.

Alvin

I was so upset to find out that my beloved pet Alvin had to go to the pound when I was in Calif taking care of my mother who is 83. He was an awesome chiweenie, 2 yrs old. I adored him and couldnt take him with me, he was left home with my daughter and family.. My granddaughter is only 4 yrs old and Alvin starting biting her. He is very nervous and can't be with the little ones without supervision. I know this was my fault, but I am trying to find out if he was adopted. I want to know if he is loved as much as I loved him. I have tried to find out but I cant. I just got home and all I do is think and dream about him. Please if you have adopted him let me know he is ok. I will forever love this little guy.

my dogs

I have two great dogs that always stay inside my house unless I am gone. I am also very careful in making sure my gate is shut when I let my dogs out.One day after i got off of work my gate was still shut and my dogs was not there i called my other half to see if they where outside still when she left to work. She told me that she fill there water bowls up before she left using the back door not the gate. so my dogs was still there however they were gone within a half hour so i looked for them i could not find them i call animal control to see if someone picked them up sure they did. I ask where they pick up me dogs the said on my street. right when my other half just left i mean 2 min after. i know my dog did not jump the fence i believe they let them out them self. On top of that i called about some dogs on my street bark all night roaming the road but could not check it out totally refuse to do so.It is ok for everyone else dog to roam my street jumping at cars and bark all hours but they will take my dogs.what a service thanks! okc animal control.

Awesome caring people

We have lost our pet, still haven't found him, but the OKC Shelter has been more than helpful and are truly pet lovers I only hope someone takes my missing pet there. I feel certain that a reunion would be certain due to their dedication of reuniting pet owners to their missing pets.

Although I could not get the information to vaccinate my newly acquired cat from someone else at 9:00 p.m. I will call in the morning..HOWEVER...this business has helped many animals by responding to my calls of animals in distress....they are prompt..understanding..and VERY accurate. They have many services to help all but the most important one is the volunteer work which more people should be involved in INSTEAD of breeding...If people only knew how many of GOD's innocent creations have to be sent back to HIM..they might rethink sterilization.....I cannot believe people care more about money than DEATH!!! How many must DIE before something so simple is realized by man's own hand's...If you would not do that kind of thing to your children...why would you do that to one of GOD's cretures who has no VOICE..other than the one that might annoy YOU!!!Thakyou OKC animal welfare employees and volunteers for all that you do that goes unnoticed....you are not forgotten by the housemouse...:)

Terrible Facility!!!

I adopted a lab mix puppy from this shelter. One week later, she developed a severe staff infection in her respitory system. She received Clavamox from a vet. Unfortunatley, the bacteria was so strong, it was resistant to Clavamox, Doxycycline and Amoxicillin. The infection became pneumonia in her lungs and bacterial arthritis in her legs. We finally put her on augmentin and she seems to be doing better. It's been about 2 weeks. I know two other families who adopted from this shelter. One puppy had the same symptoms as mine but her vet had her put to sleep, fearing that she had the canine distemper virus. The other family ended up with a puppy that developed bordetella (kennel cough). My vet told me that my puppy's bacterial infection takes about 7 days to show symptoms. The pup was sick EXACTLY one week after I took her home!!! I called this facility and they did not even take my name or APOLOGIZE. All the operator was concerned with was proving to me the facility could not be held liable
