Humane Society Of New York For over 100 years, the Humane Society of New York has been a presence in New York City, caring for animals in need when illness, injury or homelessness strikes. In 1904 we were founded to protect the city's horses against abuse. Members fought for laws to punish negligent owners and place watering troughs in streets and parks. As funds allowed the Society expanded to include a free medical clinic and a small adoption center for cats and dogs. Today our hospital and our Vladimir Horowitz and Wanda Toscanini Horowitz Adoption Center help more than 30, 000 dogs and cats annually, and their numbers continue to grow. On any given day the Humane Society of New York is responsible for hundreds of animals with diverse needs. For many, the Society is the only place they will find help:

Overall

The vet I saw clearly doesn't like people or animals. He was very cold, condescending and rude. I don't even know why he even decided on this career. He should do something that doesn't involve talking to anyone like an assembly line. I went to find out what a bump was on my 10 year old dog. He showed no concern when he told me it was a tumor. He recommended I get it removed as well as clean his teeth. Scheduling both set the next appointment out over 6 weeks so I only did the growth removal for the following week instead since it concerned me more than his teeth cleaning. The receptionist advised me that I can request for the teeth cleaning to be done when I go for my visit in case there is a cancellation and they could possibly do it that day. So I went the following week for my appointment and saw the same vet. When I asked him if there were any cancellations making the cleaning possible, he said "that's like winning the lottery here." So why did the receptionist even suggest the possibility?



Secondly, I showed up at 8:3am for his surgery. He sat locked in a cage all day until they decided to do the surgery before closing and contacted me at 4:30pm that he would have to stay overnight. My dog has extreme anxiety and I would not have agreed to keep him over night. If the establishment had booked so many surgeries that day they why does everyone have to come in at 8:30am to have your dog sit in a cage all day. When I picked him up the next morning, I could hear him howling even before I opened the door. They said "he must have heard you talking" - very patronizing.



When I finally got him, he was bleeding out of his eye. The vet that just did the "final checkup" before releasing him said "did he have surgery?" YES! Not on his eye! Didn't you just look at him? She said she wiped crust off his eye and couldn't explain why that would cause bleeding. I've wiped crust from his eye for 10 years and he's never bled. This place is absolutely terrible.

The absolute worst vet care imaginable. I had the misfortune to take my cat to the Humane Soc Clinic on June 28 2013. There I encountered female vet Dr Swartz. No introduction /Good Morning. [I got her name off her coat.] She rudely told me she smelled cigarette smoke on me and that "I should smoke outside". I was not smoking in the clinic. I should have known then and there that this woman was not normal but I was there for the good of my cat so said nothing. I attempted in vain to convey symptoms in chronological order only to be silenced by Dr S's edict "I CAN NOT LISTEN AND WRITE AT THE SAME TIME"! She roughly examined my cat in a most disinterested fashion. An X ray was done which revealed no blockage. NO DIAGNOSIS OR THEORIES FROM Dr. S, only this insane directive: For a cat with NO BLOCKAGE, NO FEVER, HYDRATED, GOOD VITAL SIGNS, ALERT and MOBILE, I was told my cat should be taken to the ANIMAL MEDICAL CENTER and placed in INTENSIVE CARE!! She said a snide "Good Luck" as I left. I wrote a letter of complaint to the Society President [who did not respond personally] but I was contacted by a Ms. De Feo who told me what "a wonderful vet Dr Swartz has been for 10 years at the HSNY." She said when given my letter Dr Swartz "cried". I cry too for the poor animals and owners subjected to this woman's insanity. PET OWNERS GO ELSEWHERE!

They made me wait over half an...

They made me wait over half an hour for each of my rabbits when I had them spayed. When I spoke to the doctor about whether the pain meds were included in the cost of the spay at the initial check-up I was told yes and when I picked up my first rabbit from getting spayed I got told that it was extra. When I brought my last rabbit in to be spayed, which all of the procedures were paid in full before the date of service, they tried to tell me that I owed money because the procedure is $115, not $100. That afternoon when I went to get my youngest, I was told that the vet needed to move my bunny's intestines to spay her because her uterus was underdeveloped. I had told the vet when he scheduled her spaying she would only be 19 weeks old by the day of the surgery. Then when I tried to actually get her so I can leave it took a very long time. When I asked where she was, I was told first, that they were "looking for her", then I was given the excuse that pick-up for surgery is always busy and takes a few minutes. I waited over twenty minutes. Finally, when I got home I found there was bandaging around my rabbit's back leg. When I called them, they essentially told me, oops, they must have forgotten to remove that when the catheter was removed, if there is no infection she's fine. I had to cut the bandaging out of her fur because it was so stuck to her that not even water was loosening it! My rabbit will not let me touch her now because I hurt her and restrained her trying to get the bandaging off!

Katie-Rude office clerk!

Horrible experience trying to make an appointment with a woman named Katie. She was abrupt and abrassive. She should not be taking telephones calls.She should be stay in the back as not to have to deal with people.She must hate her job and herself. Poor thing!
