Multiple Sclerosis
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease of the central nervous system in which an inflammatory attack occurs disrupting the brain or spinal cord’s myelin. Myelin is the fatty layer that surround nerves, providing insulation and allowing for the fast transmission of nerve impulses. When this demyelination occurs there is disruption of the nerve’s electric transmission, which in turn can produce a wide range of symptoms such as visual loss, numbness, weakness and lack of coordination and balance.
Epilepsy

Ultrasound
Culicchia Neurological Clinic was proud to offer carotid artery screenings as part of the Aces Against Aneurysms fundraising tennis tournament. A carotid artery ultrasound is a screening test that detects blockages that could cause a stroke. It uses high-frequency sound waves to create pictures of the inside of the two large arteries in your neck that supply your brain with oxygen-rich blood.

Fitness Expert Mackie Shilstone’s sciatica flared up after training Serena Williams for the U.S. Open. He turned to the Culicchia Spine Team for relief, including Dr. Stephen Rynick, for a lumbar epidural steroid injection. He wrote about his treatment in his weekly column on nola.com. “My pain, originating on the left outer hip then migrating to the mid-thigh and lateral calf, followed this exact path and was originally thought to be a hip bursitis — the product of the plyometric jumping we did to increase Williams’ acceleration to the ball,” he wrote.

The team of neurosurgeons at Culicchia Neurological are affiliated with the LSU Department of Neurosurgery. These same neurosurgeons are an important part of the West Jefferson Medical Center neurosurgery team that was ranked among the top 10 percent in the United States for 2012.
Otolaryngology
Dr. Arriaga is a diplomate of the American Board of Otolaryngology with certification in both Otolaryngology and Neurotology. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Fellow of the American Otological Society, and a member of the North American Skull Base Society. He is a past president of the American Neurotology Society.

Botox
Botulinum toxin is a neurotoxin used to treat spasticity, a condition caused by any damage to the brain or spinal cord. Spasticity causes increased muscle tone and extreme tightness that prohibits use of the muscle. The commercial medical drug, marketed as “Botox” or “Dysport” are highly purified forms that can be injected directly into the muscle to relieve the tightness. By making sure the injections are in just the right spot, botulinum toxin can provide very effective treatment with few side effects.

Physical Therapy
Vestibular Rehabilitation is a highly-specialized form of physical therapy that helps patients maintain their focus while moving so they can better control their balance while standing, sitting, walking, or moving around. “All of those movements are influenced by the inner ear and the brain. Think of it as our body’s central processing center, which sends signals to the eyes to stabilize balance and focus,” explained CNC Hearing and Balance Center Vestibular Therapist Carrie Black, PT, DPT, C/NDT. “Our vestibular therapists work to re-training patients to process that movement so they no longer experience subjective dizziness or imbalance.”
