American Stave Company is an ISO registered subsidiary of Independent Stave Company based in Lebanon, MO. We are the main domestic stave producer for Independent Stave Company. We consist of three stave mills: New Florence Wood Products in New Florence, MO Salem Wood Products in Salem, MO Blue River Wood Products in Salem, IN Our Log Procurement Division is staffed with 15 buyers that cover more than 10 states and work to supply the four mills with high quality white oak stave logs. Independent Stave Company was founded by T.W. Boswell in 1912 and for the first 40 years, our business focus was on white oak staves and heading for cooperage stock. By 1951, J.E. Boswell had expanded into the bourbon barrel business that later led to the establishment of our wine barrel division, Cooperages 1912 by current CEO and Chairman of the Board John Boswell. Since 1997, we have established international subsidiaries to meet the growing demand for American white oak worldwide Today we are the largest barrel manufacturer in the world, marketing our products in over 19 countries.

For stave production we purchase white oak and chinkapin oak, which is a sub-species of white oak. These two species of oak contain properties that make them leak proof. And while there are other species such as post oak and bur oak that contain these properties, they also contain properties that are not desirable in the barrel making process. When purchasing stave logs our buyers are required to follow and are held accountable to a set of standards. The buyers are audited based on the standards to protect the log seller as well as ASC. This is a unique practice and we are very proud to be an industry leader. These standards take in account the size and quality of the log to determine volume and purchase price. The following are general size and quality requirements. Length 8 feet to 20 feet long Diameter 11 inches on the small end to 30 inches on the big end. Quality A few small knots are allowed along the log, but there should be at least two clean sides and very little rot on either end of the log. The process: Have the logs cut down, bucked up and laid out ready for sale. Contact the buyer in your area to schedule an appointment. Once the buyer arrives they will carefully inspect and measure each log. In most cases payment will be made on the spot. If required, trucking arrangements will be made.
