Founded in 1981, Grace Smith House is a social institution that serves women and children, and enables them to live free from domestic violence. It provides shelters and apartments, and advocacy, counseling and educational services. The organization provides assistance with police, courts, social services, employment, housing and other community agencies. Grace Smith House operates two residential emergency shelters for women and their children. It also helps children who have health problems, sleeping difficulties, anxiety, and feelings of guilt, fear and powerlessness. It provides counseling sessions to children on a range of topics, such as drug and alcohol use, food addictions, teen pregnancy, homelessness and suicide. The organization also publishes periodical newsletters. Grace Smith House is based in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
