Service was good; pizza was pretty good, but our out-of-town guests ordered an entree that was way over-salted, like every other entree we've ever gotten there. Should have learned from those experiences, but they really wanted to go there. Also, don't go to City House if you have ANY dietary conditions, intolerances, allergies or differences of opinion from what is being prepared. I asked the server if one element of a dish could be left off to make the dish vegetarian. I was told that the kitchen considered each dish a 'work of art,' and no changes were ever possible, no matter what the situation.

This was our third visit to City House with three different groups and each visit was the same. It was OK. Not bad, not great. It was OK. If paying top dollar for OK is .. OK, then City House is for you.

Let me just start by saying ""sparse"" and ""modern"" are not words I usually associate with places I like. I am, however, going to make an exception in the case of CITY HOUSE. (Incidentally I also generally take issue with words spelled in all caps because I feel like someone is YELLING AT ME FOR NO REASON, but again, I'm willing to overlook it this time.) The reason I am being so uncharacteristically generous here is because CITY HOUSE has both great food and an exciting atmosphere, and restaurants rarely manage to achieve both of those things at once. CITY HOUSE is a somewhat recent addition to historic Germantown, and in keeping with that Old Worldly theme, the entrance looks like a beautifully weathered Italian home. It is attractive but rustic, which is something you might say about the family-style food you'll find inside. They even have an outdoor ""room"" that is evocative of a screened-in porch, and I have no doubt it will be prime real estate once spring actually arrives. Most delightful, however, are the intriguing Italian-based menu items your group will get to choose from. The menus are seasonal and Chef Tandy Wilson makes the most of what's fresh. The Roasted Vegetable Salad with Walnut Pesto and Pecorino is a prime example of this - - the sweet potatoes and brussel sprouts are perfectly cooked and seasoned. And these are far from the ""icky"" brussel sprouts kids are always feeding to dogs on 1950's sitcoms, so have no fear. If you're looking for something a little more adventurous, try out the Potato Pizza or the Octopus Pasta. The latter is slightly fishy, but in the good taste-of-the-ocean way, not the stale can-of-tuna way. Their House Cured Salami and Olive antipasti are also satisfying ways to start out your meal. And speaking of starting yourself out right, let me suggest one of CITY HOUSE's signature cocktails to take the edge off. I fell in love with the Dark & Stormy, a drink that packs an unexpected zing and is made up of Goslings Rum, Ginger Beer and Lime. (I was once told by an orthopedic tech who was putting me in a cast that I was ""dark and stormy"" myself, so I pretty much order this whenever it's offered. To be fair, who is light and cheery when their foot is being encased in plaster for the second time in one year? Yeah, that's what I thought.) --------- If you're in a slightly more sparkly place than my decidedly downbeat demeanor allows, test out The Classic, a cocktail served martini-style that consists of Moscato D’ Asti (sparkling white wine) and House Infused Lemon Vodka. This was the perfect pairing with their dessert du jour, some fluffy cake concoction, the name of which I do not know because I was too busy stuffing my face with it to ask the waiter. I could care less about anything sweet if it doesn't come in a wine glass, but this strawberry-sauced slice of heaven had the best icing I've ever tasted. It was more like fresh whipped cream than it was like icing, and I literally took it out of the birthday girl's hands because I have no shame.

The bartender was delightful, but he server didn't explain things very well at all. For instance, he failed to mention that the pizza came with a very hot (spicey hot) oil on it. It went mostly uneaten. The menu is kinda limited, making it really hard to order. The food was generally very tasty.The dessert took a long, long, long time to be delivered, on a not busy night. The interior is rather cavernous and unwelcoming.

I felt compelled to write a good review for this great restaurant after seeing all of the negative ones. I recently went to City House to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday. It was their Sunday Supper menu which is a bit more limited I believe then their menu during the week, but definitely not lacking in creativity. We ordered drinks from the bar, which came quickly. For apps, we had the H20 melon and grilled peaches, as well as the pork rinds, and wings. The food came out hot and tasty! For our main courses we split their Kitchen Pie and the cheesy grits. Both were full of flavor and delicious. For dessert we had some kind of sweet potato treat. It was fantastic. When the check came, I was surprised at how low it was. I was fully expecting at least $100, but for 2 drinks, 3 apps, 2 entrees and a dessert, the bill was $60. Service was excellent, I loved the Titans jersey's. We will certainly be back!

Highly disppointed. We had read that Tandy Wilson was nominated as best chef in the Southeast by the James Beard Award. Maybe it was an off night but gosh it was not good. Had 2 appetizers, some salad-like offering with proscuitto a little celery, a little cheese, and a couple of peanuts- no greens. Meager is a generous description. Barely a taste for the two of us. Also ordered the frico appetizer, potaoes and cheese melted. It was okay but a little pepper would have really helped. Very bland. I ordered the trout on a bed of crumbed something that had a pleasant citurs flavor with peanuts and raisens. The crumb bed was the best thing about it. The trout was over cooked and just fair. ALso had as a side the grits with some kind of bland cheese on top. They were a watery mess. I've had much better at Cracker Barrel. My husband had the catfish and while it was cooked nicely and a beautiful piece of fish. It was just so-so. Wine was good; should be at 11.00 a glass. Again, very disappointed. Still looking for a replacement for Zola's.

Not always perfect but damn close. He's maybe the only chef in town who is untethered by an overlord and has the chops to back it up. Probably the most knowledgeable staff in Nashville, too. Pork snacks, pig ears, AND pizza? Come on, what else do you want?

I love the location and the vibe of the place, but I was not in love with the menu, octopus, trout, black eyed peas in my pasta. I wish they had a few more simple items. The Hemingway drinks were great, but at $9.00 per drink you can't expect them to be anyting but great.\r \r need more selections on the menu and more wait staff.
