Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness. It is a group of eye diseases that cause damage to the optic nerve and can cause blindness without any warning or symptoms. Over 4 million Americans have glaucoma and only half of them know they have it. People at every age are at risk for glaucoma, from babies to seniors. It is not curable and any vision lost cannot be regained.
Ophthalmology
Virtually every individual over age 65 has some cataract formation in their eyes. At one time, this condition was a leading cause of blindness worldwide, but today cataracts can be treated effectively. Modern treatment techniques at our Mountain View ophthalmology office make cataract surgery safe, fast, and effective.
Macular Degeneration
Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ADM) is the leading cause of severe vision loss in adults over age 50. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that 1.8 million people have AMD and another 7.3 million are at substantial risk for vision loss from AMD. Caucasians are at higher risk for developing AMD than other races. Women also develop AMD at an earlier age than men. This eye disease occurs when there are changes to the macula, a small portion of the retina that is located on the inside back layer of the eye. AMD is a loss of central vision that can occur in two forms: “dry” or atrophic and “wet” or exudative.
Laser Eye Surgery

It is placed inside the eye to replace glasses or contact lenses for patients with nearsightedness with or without astigmatism. The EVO Visian ICL™ is made of a unique blend of polymer and natural collagen, a substance found in the body. Because of its composition and design, it is foldable, to fit through a smaller incision, and can be placed behind the iris, for a completely natural appearance. The Light Adjustable Lens, or LAL, is an intraocular lens (IOL) that is surgically implanted into the eye to replace the natural lens during cataracts surgery.

Diabetic retinopathy is a condition occurring in persons with diabetes, which causes progressive damage to the retina, the light sensitive lining at the back of the eye. It is a serious sight-threatening complication of diabetes.

Ultrasound
The cataract surgery takes 20 minutes. Drs. Beers or Liu carefully place numbing drops in your eye, remove the cloudy cataract lens with a fine ultrasound probe using phacoemulsification, and replace your new lens with a new artificial lens that has been selected for the shape of your eye. Careful measurements using ORA technology can be done to help ensure that the power of the new lens is correct for each patient. Once the procedure is complete, antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops are placed. No eye patch is needed. The small incision heals quickly. Because no sutures are needed, most patient resume their normal activities just a few days after surgery.

Eyelid Surgery
As with any surgery, blepharoplasty carries some risks, such as infection or reaction to anesthesia. Temporary numbness of the eyelid skin and bruising for a week or two is common. Fortunately, any complication from eyelid surgery is rare and patients are quite pleased with their improved peripheral vision and cosmetic appearance following eyelid surgery.
Blepharoplasty
Blepharoplasty is surgery performed by Dr. Beers of Peninsula Laser Eye Medical Group in our state-of-the-art surgery center in Mountain View. This procedure involves repairing droopy eyelids by removing excess skin, muscle and fat. As we age, our eyelids stretch, and the muscles supporting them weaken. As a result, excess fat may gather above and below the eyelids, causing sagging eyebrows, drooping upper lids and bags under your eyes. Besides making us look older, severely sagging skin around the eyes can impair the peripheral or side vision. Blepharoplasty can reduce or eliminate such impaired vision. Some insurance companies will cover the removal of excessive eyelid skin if the excessive skin is interfering with activities such as reading and/or driving.

Skin Cancer
Many chalazia disappear without treatment in several weeks to a month. However, a simple surgical excision is sometimes necessary to remove the chalazion. This procedure is typically only a ten minute procedure done in the office. Rarely, they may be an indication of a more serious infection or skin cancer.
Ulcer
A corneal ulcer is an open sore on the cornea, the thin clear structure overlying the iris, which is the colored part of your eye.
