Macular Degeneration
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a disease associated with aging that gradually destroys sharp, central vision. Central vision is needed for seeing objects clearly and for common daily tasks such as reading and driving.

Cataracts
Floaters are more common in people who are very nearsighted, haveÂ diabetes, or who have had aÂ cataract Â operation. There are other, more serious causes of floaters, including infection, inflammation (uveitis), hemorrhaging, retinal tears, and injury to the eye.
Cataract Surgery
Cataracts are a very common cause of visual impairment in older adults and are considered an inevitable part of aging. Half of all Americans have cataracts or have had cataract surgery by age 80. In many cases, if a cataract does not seriously affect vision, surgery may not be recommended right away; simply adjusting the current glasses or contact lens prescriptions is the recommended step for those with mild to moderate cataracts. For most, cataracts progress slowly as we age, as does the amount of visual impairment produced by cataracts.
Eye Exam
External eye exam: Using a light to ensure the exterior parts of your eyes are functioning correctly. Your eye doctor will check your pupils to see if they respond normally and your cornea and iris for clarity.

He is a Senior Attending at Morristown Medical Center and served as Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology. Diabetic Retinopathy
If you or a family member has diabetes, there is something you should know about your eyes. Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that results from damage to the blood vessels of the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. In the beginning stages, diabetic retinopathy may cause no symptoms or only mild vision problems. Eventually, however, it can result in blindness. Diabetic retinopathy is a leading cause of blindness in adults in the United States.

Ultrasound
The circular opening then allows the surgeon to access and remove the cataract. In the traditional manual procedure, a mechanical instrument and ultrasound energy are used during this step to break up and take out the lens. With CATALYSÂ®, the laser softens the cataract and breaks it into tiny pieces. The new softening technique allows for more gentle removal by nearly or completely eliminating the ultrasound energy required. This low-energy approach reduces inflammation, with faster recovery expected.
