Dental Examination
The diagnostic regimen utilized to pinpoint the problem is extensive. A comprehensive examination, medical history, X-rays of the joints, and models of the teeth. More recently, computer technology is providing joint vibration analysis, muscle function analysis, and jaw motion tracking. These new tools are playing an important role in removing the subjective elements in our diagnostic efforts.

Teeth Cleaning
There is much to say about periodontal disease, and you’ll find most of it in the section on it, so here we’ll limit this to saying prevention is focused on keeping plaque and calculus (tartar) off of the teeth, as they are the source of irritation and infection of the gum tissues that result in periodontal disease. Therefore, an approach that combines good oral hygiene practices (brushing and flossing) at home with regular professional care (dental cleanings by the hygienist) is the foundation of prevention. Like tooth decay, there are other factors, so be sure to read through the section on periodontal disease for more information.

Air Abrasion – With an emphasis on conservative restorative dentistry in this office, the Air Abrasion system plays an important part. The handpiece of this machine delivers a stream of grit, water, and air that can clean stains off your tooth, drill a hole in your tooth to expose a cavity, clean out the decay, roughen the surface to get a better bond, and even coat the surface of the tooth roots where gum recession has exposed them. No vibration from a noisy drill and very painless so It allows us to do more conservative dentistry with less “shots”.

Root Canal Treatment
In dentistry, the gas form is being used primarily to sterilize tooth decay and treat gum disease as both are bacterial infections. It is also well suited for sterilizing root canals as a gas can penetrate much more thoroughly into tooth structure than the traditional liquids.

Intra-Oral Scanner – Hate getting that goopy stuff in your mouth to get a night guard made, or a crown? This new scanner is basically a 3D camera, from which models of the teeth can then be fabricated using a 3D printer. Crowns, bridges, dentures, retainers, night guards, and more are all made from models of the teeth. This system simply scans the teeth and creates a 3D image. The technology has become so advanced that a crown can be made for your tooth completely through the digital scanning, design, and fabrication without ever making a model at all. The accuracy is astounding.

In addition to activities of the above organizations, Dr. Johnson has advanced his education and enhanced his practice through numerous educational courses, seminars, and study groups. He is founder and facilitator of the Southern California Dental-Cranial Study Group and is a member of of the Glendale Academy, the Implant Study Group, and the American Italian Dental Association. He participates in conferences and seminars for the organizations above as well as for those such as the International Association for Facial Growth Guidance, the Holistic Dental Association, Mid America Orthodontic Society, and BioResearch.
