Macular Degeneration
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is more common in people over 60. It can cause a partial loss of vision. “Wet” AMD is associated with new, unwanted, leaky blood vessels in the eye. It can be treated with medicine. “Dry” AMD is a slower process and does not have specific treatment. Vision rehabilitation may help a person adjust to life with AMD.
Laser Eye Surgery
Independent contractor at two separate private practices in Charlotte, NC from August 2008 until October 2010. Primary care optometry was the predominant form of care practiced at both locations, with an emphasis on fitting toric and multifocal soft contacts and various RGP lenses, treating dry eyes, treating walk-in conditions and co-managing pre and post operative cataract and LASIK patients. Proficiency obtained with the EMR program Exam Write.
Cataracts
Most people have some clouding of their eye’s natural crystalline lens after the age of 60. This clouding is more commonly referred to as a cataract. About 50% of Americans in the age group of 65 – 74 have at least one cataract, and about 70% of those age 75 and over have cataract(s). Simply stated, when the eye’s lens becomes cloudy, light cannot be properly focused on the retina; thus, vision decreases. The only “cure” for poor vision due to a cataract is to remove the lens and implant a new, man-made lens called an intraocular lens (IOL).
Cataract Surgery
Contact lenses can correct the vision of people of all ages, provided no physical conditions prevent contacts from being worn safely and comfortably. Contact lenses are often prescribed to seniors after cataract surgery and are ideal for those suffering from mid-life presbyopia (the ability to clearly focus on objects that are near).
Eye Exam
There for you and your family members during every stage of your lives to ensure optimal vision and ocular health. All children should have their eyes examined by an eye doctor at least by the time they enter school. The American Optometric Association, in fact, suggests that children have their first regular eye exam at 6-months. Follow-up exams should be at 3-years old and again just before starting school. If a problem is found, of course, more frequent care may be necessary.

Most surgeons today use ultrasound vibrations to break apart the cataract and remove it. This process is called phacoemulsification. Cataracts are not removed with a laser.
