Glaucoma is a complex anterior segment eye disease which most commonly causes damage to the optic nerves, blind spots, and loss of vision when fluid called aqueous humor builds up in the front (anterior segment) of the eye and causes increased intraocular pressure (IOP), which is transmitted to the optic nerve.

We understand that children can be anxious about visiting a new doctorâ€˜s office, so we offer an opportunity to bring your child in before his or her appointment for a brief tour of the office where one of our staff members will discuss the special equipment Dr. Shin uses and what steps are involved in an eye examination.

Patients with diabetes are at risk to develop diabetic retinopathy, a condition in which high or uncontrolled blood sugars damage the vessels in the retina.

Ultrasound
Dense cataracts at an early age cause deprivation amblyopia, the most severe form of amblyopia (or lazy eye). If the view of the back of the eye is inadequate, the patient should see a retina specialist for a b-scan ultrasound of the eye to rule out posterior segment pathology, including a mass or retinal detachment, which could have led to the cataract.
MRI
An MRI/MRA/CT scan may help elucidate whether a brain tumor, aneurysm, arteriovenous malformation, or lesion in the internal auditory canal is the culprit.

Botox
First-line treatment involves injections of botulinum toxin A (Botox), typically every 3 months, because there is less risk involved than with the more invasive procedures. Systemic medications are often not effective and side effects restrict the dose that can be administered.
Eyelid Surgery

Lesions
Various lesions can form on the external structures of the eye, including the conjunctiva, cornea, iris, sclera, and/or eyelids and while many are benign, it is important to have the lesion evaluated by Dr. Shin since some can be malignant and/or interfere with vision.
