Stay as far away from this bus...

Stay as far away from this business as possible. The specifications Performance Engines claims are top notch. I am now having trouble with a very expensive engine and can't get them to respond to phone calls, e-mails, or even registered letters. I have 2 low cylinders most likely due to exhaust valve leaks with only 100 hours on the engine. I can't even get them to send me the build sheet for my engine showing what parts they used. that is required by FAA regulation. I've seen multiple complaints about their poor communication skills elsewhere on the internet. they talk a good game until they have your money. I am very sorry I did business with Ron Monson and his crew.

STAY AWAY from this fraudulent business.

I paid for a "Stage II" complete overhaul of my Continental 0-300-a engine inculding NEW Titan CermiNil cylinders.

No tags were returned with the new parts. I called and asked for the tags and was told they would send them but they never showed up. They stopped enswering phone calls, and emails. I even sent a registered letter which went unanswered.

After 158 hours SMOH, compression in 3 cylinders were at 50, 55 and 25 over 80. I sent those cylinders to an independent shop only to discover they were not only, not new Titan CermiNil cylinders, but had been bored over .015 which is the legal limit. This indicates they had been overhauled twice. All three needed new exhaust valve guides, two needed intake and exhaust valve seats. the valves were reground.

I contacted Ron Monson (owner of Performance Engines) and told him I paid for new and got overhauled. He said they would refund the difference in price but no longer had the records. I sent him copies of his invoice along with copies of the independent shop's report. Once again they stopped answering phone calls, and emails. No refund.

After another 38 hours the compression was down in the 50s again so I replaced those 3 cylinders with new. 196 hours SMOH.

At 371 hours, a valve stuck in one of the remaining cylinders so I replaced the remaining 3 with new.

Dealing with Performance Engines was a nightmare. After the initial 4 weeks, Ron would never answer the phone nor respond to voice mails nor respond to emails, even after calling almost every day. Eventually we arranged for a local insurance adjuster to call him. Eventually Ron would not respond to the local adjuster either. We had to resort to physically visiting his shop. Visiting the shop was hit or miss - sometimes the shop was closed. He made repeated promises of completion times which always came and went. Eventually we picked up the engine on May 11th, just over 6 months from when he got it. Ron said that everything was fine with the engine.

But the story doesn't end there. All six cylinders had bad score marks that needed repair. One cylinder was cracked and had to be repaired! A cracked cylinder coming from the engine shop? Had we not checked it nobody would have known that it had been cracked as part of the delivery. There were bad score marks on the inside of the oil pump and the oil pump impeller had damage so it had to be replaced. There were a few other items with damage that needed repair.

But that was not all of it. The crankcase we received with the engine was not the same one we delivered the engine with - the serial numbers didn't match. The original engine had a 7th stud crankcase. The one we got back was not. We have photos from when we shipped the engine and when we received the engine back. The photos clearly show the serial numbers of the original crankcase and the returned crankcase.
