Urinary IncontinenceUrinary incontinence (UI) is the involuntary leakage of urine or loss of urinary control. UI occurs in men and women of every age and children, but is more common in mature adults. We have effective treatments specifically for women. Men generally experience frequent urination after middle-age, which may be related to an enlarged prostate. Just because a prostate is enlarged does not mean it is cancerous. A simple diagnostic test can determine if cancer is present. Children experience UI for reasons that are very different from adults and their UI may, in fact, be perfectly normal. But it is important to diagnose your child’s condition to determine if there is a medical abnormality that can be treated.
AutismThis is what experts are saying about Autism and ADD, “You cannot call autism a developmental disability or disorder; it is like calling a brain tumor a headache. “Autism” is merely one symptom of an underlying disease process that affects the immunological system, the gastrointestinal system and the toxicological system, as well as the neurological system.”
ChemotherapyIf you or your child does have a tumor, our doctors will determine a course of treatment based on the stage of the tumor. Radiation and chemotherapy are effective, but more often, surgery is the most reliable option. An advantage of surgery is that it gives our doctors the opportunity to definitively check other organs and parts of the body to determine whether cancer has spread beyond the tumor site.
UltrasoundThe field of Phlebology is relatively new, receiving status as an independent specialty by the American Medical Association in 2005. Consequently, formal residency training programs have not yet been created by medical schools or universities and board certification was not offered until the exam became available in May of 2008. The recent explosion in interest in Phlebology by physicians and patients has been in large part due to advances in ultrasound diagnosis and laser therapy–which have dramatically simplified and improved the results of treatment of varicose vein disease.
MRIInstitute urologists and oncologists can conduct exams to determine if you or your child has a kidney tumor, such as blood and urine tests, X-ray, CT scan, ultrasound and/or MRI.
Kidney StonesNormally, a kidney stone does not cause pain while it remains in the kidney. But when it travels through the urinary system, a stone can create a blockage, causing sudden, intense pain. This means that a person with a kidney stone may not have any symptoms and, in fact, may not even be aware that he or she has a stone.
UrologyRobert Allen, MD FACS has more than 20 years of experience in both adult and pediatric urology. After undergraduate studies at Emory University he received his medical degree from The Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. He then completed a urology residency at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu. After residency, he completed a Pediatric Urology fellowship at the renowned University of Minnesota Medical Center. He has held many positions including urology residency training program director and chief of urology at two major Army medical centers. He has spent over 15 years teaching both urology and pediatric residents. More recently he served as Chief of Urology and Chief of Pediatric Urology at Madigan Army Medical Center in Fort Lewis Washington.
Minimally Invasive SurgeryInstitute urologists employ the most advanced diagnostic techniques to determine the underlying cause of incontinence. Some types of UI can be treated with medications or minimally invasive surgery, while other types of UI may require more extensive surgery. For women patients who do not respond to these approaches, we offer a scientifically advanced, high-tech treatment called “ InterStim Therapy,” which involves implanting a pacemaker-like device to stimulate bladder-brain nerve communication.
Reconstructive SurgeryDr. Allen is a member of many professional societies to include the American Urological Association and the Society of Government Service Urologists. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Urology and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in pediatric urology and pediatric reconstructive surgery. He has extensive clinical and surgical experience, has participated in many national clinical research trials and has published numerous papers in peer reviewed professional journals and medical texts.
