We ask that patients obtain any required referrals from their primary care physician prior to their scheduled appointment and bring a copy to their appointment.
Emergency Care
The Moses Cone Memorial Hospital has been a designated Level II trauma Center since 2000, and became the first Level II center in North Carolina to attain American College of Surgeons verification in 2012. Being a Level II center simply means that we have shown to the State and the American College of Surgeons that we have a program that can provide excellent care for some of the sickest and most injured patients that come through our Emergency Room.

Endoscopy
A hiatal hernia can be diagnosed by x-ray or endoscopy. Many people are treated successfully with dietary changes, lifestyle changes and medication. If these fail to control the symptoms, surgery may be recommended.
Urinary Tract Infection
First you should have a thermometer to take your temperature. Temperatures in the morning tend to be lower and then they tend to rise in the afternoon and evening. Low-grade temperatures (99-100 F) may occur especially after general anesthesia and when the patient is not taking deep breaths. The reason for not taking deep breaths can be related to abdominal soreness from incisions. Fevers associated with burning with urination may signal a urinary tract infection.

Ultrasound
Drainage from the nipple is a common problem. It is divided into bloody drainage and non- bloody drainage. Non-bloody drainage is usually benign and not commonly associated with breast cancer. Bloody drainage has a 10 % risk of being associated with a cancerous process. The most common finding is a small growth within the duct called a papilloma. This causes the discharge. Many times these are removed to treat the discharge and exclude a cancerous growth. Tests that help decide on treatment are mammogram, ultrasound and ductogram. A ductogram involves injecting dye into the milk duct and taking x-rays. Overall, most nipple discharges are not cancerous problems but do need to be evaluated by your doctor to exclude cancer.

Please note that when you have surgery, separate bills will be sent by the Operating Room facility, Pathology, Radiology, and Anesthesiology Services. A: Depending on what mesh is used, it may show up on imaging studies. This can be helpful for your surgeon in the follow up. Mesh will not prevent you from getting X-rays, MRIs, or CT scans.

Laparoscopy
Surgery usually is performed by way of laparoscopy (multiple small incisions) and involves repairing the weakened hiatus and often performing an anti-reflux procedure. People typically do well as long as they follow the after surgery instructions and make some minor lifestyle changes.

Botox
There are three well-known treatments for achalasia. First, injection of Botox into the LES which leads to temporary relaxation, but does not provide long-term relief. Second, dilating (widening) the LES using endoscopy which may provide long-term relief in some. Third, is cutting part of the lower esophagus muscle which is called a Heller myotomy. This can usually be done laparoscopically (multiple small incisions). This procedure has the best long-term result.

Laparoscopic Surgery
A ventral hernia is a defect in the strong layers of your abdominal wall. This may be a result of congenital defect, as a result of injury, excessive strain, or as a result of prior surgery. This may show up with an abdominal bulge or with abdominal pain. Once you have a hernia, this will not fix itself. Surgery is the only effective treatment for ventral hernia. This can be done with open surgery through a single larger incision or with laparoscopic surgery using several smaller incisions and a camera. Either way, placement of a mesh is often required for repair. Your surgeon will discuss the options with you and customize the treatment to your situation.

Some surgical procedures may not be covered by your insurance company in which case you would be responsible for payment in full prior to surgery. Currently we do not offer a cash pay program for Bariatric Surgery.

We offer a comprehensive service in trauma care with two Central Carolina Surgery (CCS) attendees trained and focused on trauma and critical care. Our panel of CCS trauma surgeons are all credentialed to provide the highest level of care. Physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy are available on a daily basis, and appropriately offered to those that need their services. Physician assistants, a dedicated case manager, and a dedicated social worker help round out our team. We work very hard to make sure that every patient on our service has the best possible outcome.
