Overall
Food
Service

This is an old school restaurant ran old school. It is very popular with elders and funerals are held here weekly. It's beautifully decorated classy bordello style with Renaissance style paintings and memorabilia of Maryland yesturyears. No Windows but hardly that is hardly noticeable with so much too look at.
The tables are just a tad too close together and booths are comfortable for only 2 people. This restaurant is not a good for small kids or large families for a casual dinner.
The service can be hit or miss as well as the food.
With that said if you ask for a good server, make a reservation that is not during peak hours and know the menu you will be having a wonderful dining experience.
Shrimp salad done multiple ways, cream of crab, Maryland crab soup, sour beef, Italian sausage with a side of pasta are the most popular dishes. The homemade pickled beets, cucumber salad and coleslaw are also winners..as well as mile high fresh strawberry shortcake made daily.
Happy hour prices and bar apetizers are well worth it. Drinks are strong due to free pouring.

After combing through about 1000 reviews these are the most noted complaints.
Dated relish tray that tastes old.
Cold fries.
Crab cakes that are pedestrian and over priced.
Over fried and over cooked chicken dishes.
Appetizers taking longer than main dishes.
Obtuse management.
All in all a great place for lunch or a special occasion.

I love the restaurant and the food. However after the way I was treated Sat, 1/19 not sure if I will ever be back, and I will let it be known why. Made reservations for 6:30 pm. Sure you expect to wait a little while, but hr later....so I said something to hostess after two other families that I know of were seated who did not have reservations and were told "they have been here since 5" Do I care, I had reservations. Told her I would be better off just walking in, and complaining, seems like I would have been seated faster. Still waiting, asked to speak to mgr, Mike came over. First, he never apologized for the wait and was rude. He asked me where I was last week, why? I don't know, I told him I went to Outback in Annapolis during the week and only waited 20 min. He acted like I was lying and said come on, you know you waited longer, like 1.5 hrs. I really only waited 20 min there. Anyway, he never apologized for the wait, told me I could come back on Sunday. I told him I would never be back after tonight. He got nasty and said fine he had a seat for us.....Michelle our waitress was wonderful. She apologized for the wait, and provided excellent service. Maybe she should be the manager and fire Mike, he was useless. The food was excellent, so its a shame that I feel I cannot go back, since I cannot wait forever. I will never recommend the location just because of the wait and how I was treated by Mike.

African American Couple have been dining here for years

My boyfriend took me here for one of our first dates 13 years ago and we have returned over 100 times since. I was shocked to hear that Sunset practices racism because we are always greeted with a warm smile and good seating. Yes, some of the waitresses are past retirement age but the eldest waitress there is my favorite (there are no African-American waitresses there but that does not bother us). She gets our drinks, brings the salad out right away and entree' right on time. I must admit that they need new carpet because the smoke residue is so deeply embedded in the fibers. We always get the crab imperial which is by far their best entree'. We also have come dressed in jeans and that did not present a problem. The menu prices are actually pretty good in my opinion. I am not sure what other want to pay for someone to seat them, wait on them hand and foot, and clean their dishes but $50 for two people is not expensive. If it is, they should go to a fast food restaurant.

Corned Beef and Cabbage Dinner for St. Patrick's Day

I was most displeased with the corned beef and cabbage dinner that I purchased as a carry out item on St. Patrick's Day evening for my dinner at around 5:30 P.M. at the rear bar window. I have gotten these every St. Patrick's Day for the past ten years at your restaurant and never have I seen the meat so skimpy. There was about one potato, two or three carrots, three narrow strips of corned beef (not very long) and all the rest was about a whole head or at least three quarters of a head of cabbage. Could you please send me a coupon for a free dinner or some other likewise courtesy? Thank you, Mrs. Michael J. Stracke, 8377 Williamstowne Drive, Millersville, Maryland 21108-1067, telephone numbers 410-987-6737 (home) or 410-913-7191 (cell).

Such blatant racism

I usually go to a restaurant and if the food or service is bad I will brush it off and say I'll complain but I never do. Today I just could not do that. I went to Sunset Grill today during my lunch hour with a party of six African-American coworkers. First of all they stated they only had seats in the smoking section when clearly there were seats empty across the entire restaurant. After the we were sitting and sat for 20 min before one of my coworkers had to ask a waitress when someone was going to come help us. The waitress ignored him the first 3 times he called her and finally acknowledged him when I spoke up as well. I guess to loud African American voices got her attention. She returned seven min later and stated someone will be with us. After swatting the flies away for another 5 min. we decided to get up and leave and thats when some women who looked like the manager came over and stated she would take our order, we left. I have never experienced anything like that before. I do not leave under rose colored glasses but that experience was horrible. Please do not go to the restaurant and if you are of color I suggest you check your food or make sure you in for along wait.
