Arthritis
Good candidates are symptomatic patients under the age of fifty, with a breakdown of the knee joint due to the absence of all or part of the meniscus and are at risk for OA and/or misalignment of the bones in the knee joint. They must also have stable knee ligaments. Patients who have severe OA, uncorrected misalignment or instability, irreparable cartilage damage, active infection or rheumatoid arthritis are not good candidates. Misalignment, instability or cartilage defects may be corrected during the MAT procedure.
Cryotherapy
Early intensive rehabilitation is critical to optimal recovery, restoration of function, stability and return to play. The first four to six weeks after surgery the patient will wear a knee brace, a cryotherapy sleeve and use crutches to restrict weight bearing. Initially only passive range of motion will be permitted, and the patient may use a continuous passive motion machine. At six weeks, the patient is weaned from crutches and progresses to full weight bearing.

Ultrasound
Dr. Hackett will perform a physical exam, review your medical history, and order imaging tests including X-rays CT scan, ultrasound, and MRI. He will evaluate your condition and lifestyle to determine the best treatment option for positive and efficient recovery.
MRI
When the MCL is injured, orthopaedic surgeons will classify the injury and grade it depending on the severity. Although a thorough physical examination many times provide adequate information to determine the severity of the MCL injury, additional imaging such as X-Ray or MRI may be required to more confidently illustrate degree of the injury.
X-Rays
Computed Tomography
Accurate diagnosis is essential and requires a comprehensive physical examination while the patient is in pain, often in the emergency room. Frequently the examination must occur under anesthesia. Regular and stress x-rays, and imaging studies including MRI and CT scans will be used to quantify the extent of the injury and rule out soft tissue damage. Each case is unique.

General Surgery
Dr. Hackett then completed a general surgery internship and orthopaedic surgery residency at Boston’s prestigious New England Medical Center at Tufts University. He completed a Sports Medicine fellowship at the Kerlan-Jobe Clinic in Los Angeles, specializing in surgery of the shoulder and elbow. While in Los Angeles, Dr. Hackett served as an assistant team physician to the LA Lakers, Sparks, Dodgers, Kings, Ducks, and Galaxy professional sports teams. He continues to assist with the medical management of the professional athletes participating in the MLB, NHL, NFL, and PGA tours and is a team physician for the US Snowboard Team. Dr. Hackett is a diplomate of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.
Arthroscopy
Elbow arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure used for the inspection, diagnosis and treatment of certain elbow conditions. An arthroscope is a thin, flexible tube with a small light and video camera at the end.
Minimally Invasive Surgery
Outpatient minimally invasive surgery uses an arthroscope, a small, thin tube that contains a camera which is inserted into the knee joint through a tiny incision. It is used to examine and repair the meniscus. Small tools are inserted into small incisions for repair. This less invasive surgery will limit damage from the procedure and provide a faster recovery. Physical therapy will be recommended. Most patients are able to fully recover and return to normal activity within 2-4 weeks.

Arthroscopy
Obvious instability is easier to diagnose. However, when the symptoms are subtle arthroscopy is a valuable tool for diagnosis and treatment of PLRI. Arthroscopy allows Dr. Hackett direct vision of the inside of the joint; and based upon his expertise in complex elbow injuries, he can perform arthroscopic surgery at the same time to repair the LCL.
Knee Replacement
Osteotomy is a surgery performed to alleviate pain and delay the development of osteoarthritis in one side of the knee joint. It is ideal for younger, athletic patients who aren’t completely ready for a total knee replacement, and desire an active lifestyle for many years to come. This procedure can provide time until a knee replacement is generally required.
Knee Arthroscopy
Surgical planning is vital and will include the results of imaging, physical examination, graft selection and the use of diagnostic knee arthroscopy to identify lesions of the articular cartilage, and tears of the meniscus. Early surgical reconstruction is common and frequently occurs within two weeks of the injury.
Reconstructive Surgery
The posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) is both the largest and the strongest ligament in the knee, and functions as one of the knee’s main stabilizers. Functionally, the PCL serves to restrain posterior translation of the tibia. The PCL also serves to restrain internal rotation of the knee at 90 degrees of flexion. PCL tears are typically produced via an external force resulting from a posteriorly directed force to the anterior aspect of the proximal tibia during knee flexion (for example, hitting your knee against the dashboard of your car during a car collision). If you believe you may have a PCL injury, you may require reconstructive surgery to regain functioning of the ligament prior to returning to physical and/or daily activities. Although, there are non-surgical treatments available that may help alleviate pain.

Lesions
Localized damage to the articular cartilage is called a chondral defect or chondral lesions. Chondral defects are graded by their severity with the mildest damage being a Grade I, and the most severe damage being a Grade IV.

Physical Therapists

Sports Medicine
While rare, multi-ligament knee injuries (MLKI) are often career ending injuries for athletes, are frequently debilitating and can be complicated by associated injuries of the meniscus and the patella. Historically, these types of injuries ended professional sports participation. Today, many athletes who suffer MLKI can return to play following multi-ligament knee reconstruction by a surgeon with expertise in complex knee surgeries. Physical Therapy
Symptoms of this condition may be alleviated if the individual avoids the exercise that caused the syndrome. Cross-training with lower impact exercises may be helpful in relieving pain. The most common non-surgical treatments for exercise-induced compartment syndrome, include physical therapy, orthotics (shoe inserts), and anti-inflammatory medication.
Tennis Elbow
PLRI is also associated with tennis elbow or other injury including a fracture of the upper arm bone that does not heal in the correct position. In 90% of cases chronic elbow instability results from nonhealing soft tissue injuries or facture dislocations caused by acute trauma. 10% of cases of PLRI can be caused by repetitive stress, congenital or acquired deformities, disease, inflammatory arthritis and as a complication of previous elbow procedures such as corticosteroid injections.
