The Queen's Medical Center - West Oahu

The ER Department at this hospital is severely lacking. Other reviewers have commented on the same department of this hospital. It is terribly unfortunate that West Oahu has only one other viable option (Kaiser Permanente Moanalua).



If you go to the ER for health issues, be sure to get a second opinion from your personal doctor or another qualified physician at another hospital IMMEDIATELY. They might send you home with the common cold or an non-life threatening ailment, even if you have a terminal disease such as cancer or a head bleed, and won't bother to run the appropriate tests to determine what it is you have. Their ER doctors have either no medical training, are undeniably incompetent, or simply have a disregard for human life. Someone very close to me was sent home with a low level illness when the person actually had a curable life threatening disease requiring immediate treatment and whose body continued to deteriorate. I will not go into details but I have never seen poorer facilities than this place and a more unresponsive, inexperienced and completely inept ER team than at this hospital.



If you are looking for third-world medical care, trust these doctors and this facility. If you are looking for anything more, then I would strongly suggest that you go to any other hospital on this island. There is a reason why this hospital is bankrupt and attracts those doctors who couldn't get jobs anywhere else. You'd probably do a better job treating yourself on webmd.com than the physicians at this hospital.

If you have a child, take them to Kapiolani Medical Center. Unfortunately for us, the ambulance service said that it was beyond their district and that we could transfer once we get to Hawaii Medical Center West - but that didn't happen.



Background History: My young child was unresponsive and turning blue at the water park - not from drowning but from a medical condition. The ambulance showed up and took my child to HMCW. During the ride to the hospital, the EMTs got my child's O2 level back up to 100%, however still unresponsive and lethargic. Once we got to the hospital ER, it was like they had no idea what we were there for and it took forever for a doctor to see my child. Thank God (after 15 mins of waiting in the ER) my child started responding by crying and throwing up. However, the staff seemed unconcerned and "too busy" to care. Some of the comments made by the staff were unprofessional like "we were busy" (in a sassy way) and "stop being a cry baby" (to my child).



My past experience with Kapiolani Medical Center ER was incomparable to this. They were ready for us when we showed up and knew exactly what was going on.



Maybe my expectations are too high, but I have never experienced customer service in a medical establishment so uncaring and unprofessional.
