General Info: From as early as she could remember, Dr. Felicia Goins wanted to work in childrenâ??s dentistry. So, after completing her residency in pediatric dentistry in 1985, Dr. Goins founded Carolina Childrenâ??s Dentistry in Sumter, SC. She established the practice because she realized that there was a need for children to receive the best dental care in the state, especially in those rural areas where there are not many dentists practicing. She practiced solo for almost 13 years before Dr. Lisbeth Poag joined her in 1998.

Dental Examination
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends your child have their first dental examination by the age of one. And we agree! Each child should have an early examination to check the eruption of baby teeth, growth, and development. We are available for parents to ask questions during this exciting time in your child’s life.
X-rays

Dr. Goins has served on the board of many other community organizations such as the YWCA of the Upper Lowlands, Sumter Museum of Art, Tuomey Hospital Foundation, Kershaw County Historical Society, Heathwood Hall Episcopal School and The Columbia Chapter of Links. She was also a Board member of the University of South Carolina Commission on Higher Learning and continues to be a member at Wake Forest University College Board of Visitors.

What to watch for: Allow a period of one week for your child to become accustomed to the newness of the appliance. Watch for your child playing with appliance with their tongue or fingers. If your child should complain of appliance feeling “tight” Tylenol or Motrin should help.

Crowns
Recommended Treatment: Control bleeding by applying pressure. Locate tooth, handle by the crown (not the root) and rinse with water but do not scrub. If possible, try to reinsert in its socket. If not possible, place the tooth in milk or patients saliva. Contact dentist immediately. Time is a critical factor in the saving the tooth.

Pulpotomy
These photos show a tooth before and after a stainless steel crown has been placed. A stainless steel crown is recommended when tooth decay is too large for a traditional filling. If the decay is extensive and close to the nerve, a pulpotomy will be performed before the stainless steel crown is placed. A pulpotomy is a nerve treatment in which the nerve is removed and replaced with a sedative filling. Without a nerve treatment, a badly decayed tooth will probably abscess and later need to be extracted.
Root Canal Treatment
Ivy works in our Operative Department and graduated from Aiken Tech as a Certified Dental Assistant in 2016. Immediately after graduating, Ivy spent four years in Endodontics, but has now discovered that she is passionate about pediatric dentistry and loves laughing with the children. Ivy loves weightlifting, roller derby, drawing and singing.

Upon graduation, Dr. Durrant began practicing general dentistry in Fayetteville, NC. It was there that Dr. Durrant fell in love with the South. As a general dentist, Dr. Durrant placed a great deal of importance on continuing education with courses in endodontics, CEREC same day crowns, and Invisalign therapy. It became clear to Dr. Durrant, however, that his real passion was in helping children achieve optimum oral health, while being comfortable in a dental setting.

Cosmetic Dentistry
Caring for patients and the artistic and detail-oriented nature of the career has led Dr. Shari Martin to the dental profession. Dr. Martin has attended numerous CE courses in pediatric and cosmetic dentistry. She has attended the DOC’s training course for sedation dentistry. She has trained extensively in pediatric sedations in courses offered by UGA, UNC, and other top pediatric dental programs. She yearly attends courses discussing the newest updates on special needs patients.
