General Info

Since its beginnings more than 105 years ago, the Benjamin Rose Institute on Aging has built a Cleveland-based nonprofit into a nationally recognized research organization, a highly regarded service provider known for caring for people with complex, long-term needs, and a policy-driven advocate bringing information from around the country to the larger network of agencies serving older adults in the Greater Cleveland community. The programs of Benjamin Rose operate together to fulfill our mission to advance the health, independence and dignity of older adults through service, research and advocacy. Programs include: Home and Community-Based Services, Research and Education, the Margaret Wagner Apartments for low-income seniors, and the Rose Centers for Aging Well, which includes senior centers, in-center lunches, and home-delivered meals. Benjamin Rose provides a variety of services and programs to support senior independence in the community. Business History

The organization was founded in 1908 through the will of Cleveland industrialist Benjamin Rose, who handpicked 15 notable Cleveland women to serve as the original Board of Directors. Today, in accordance with his will, the board remains all female.

In the Benjamin Rose Institute on Aging's early years, board members selected recipients who applied for financial assistance. In an era without Social Security, the small monthly stipends (many less than $20) received by clients was often the difference between death and survival.

In the 1930s, the Benjamin Rose Institute on Aging began providing social work and medical services. Other services including Home Care, Mental Health Services, and an Adult Day Program were added over the years to help older adults age in the community. In 2014, the Golden Age Centers of Cleveland joined the Benjamin Rose family as the Rose Centers for Aging Well, providing home-delivered meals as well as hot lunches and activities in seven
