The Chicago Police Department provides law enforcement and crime prevention services. It serves the Chicago metropolitan area, which has a population of more than 2.8 million residents. The department intervenes in cases of domestic violence and provides information and assistance to victims unfamiliar to the criminal justice system. Its investigators interview people, gather documents and evaluate the facts of a crime. Additionally, the department provides a range of services, such as sex offender information, animal control, traffic safety, technical and administrative support, recovery of stolen property, marine patrolling and firearms licensing. The Chicago Police Department employs more than 13,500 sworn officers over 2,600 other employees.
