Dental Examination
X-rays
We recommend taking X-rays around the age of two or three. The first set consists of simple pictures of the front upper and lower teeth, which familiarizes your child with the process. Once the baby teeth in back are touching each other, then regular (at least yearly) X-rays are recommended. Permanent teeth start coming in around age six, and X-rays help us make sure your child’s teeth and jaw are healthy and properly aligned. If your child is at a high risk of dental problems, we may suggest having X-rays taken at an earlier age.

Teeth Cleaning
After an examination, we perform a professional dental cleaning. During this time, we remove any tartar and plaque that is stuck to your child’s teeth. After cleaning, we polish the teeth to remove any stains. This can also remove any buildup that may be left on the teeth.
Fluoride Treatment
Fluoride treatments can be completed at your child’s routine dental appointment. They are painless and quick, taking only a few minutes. When performing the treatment, your child’s dentist will apply gel, foam, or varnish on your child’s teeth. Treatment works best if it is done one to four times a year.
Dental Sealants
Dental sealant is a plastic coating painted on your teeth. It attaches to your child’s teeth, smoothing the rough edges, depressions, and grooves that are typically found on teeth. It gives your child’s teeth a protective coating, helping to prevent tooth decay and cavities.
Space Maintainers
Space maintainers are used when children lose their baby teeth early. This sometimes happen due to trauma or even decay. When a tooth is lost, other teeth will shift to fill in the space. Though this sounds good, it actually can cause a lot of spacing and alignment problems when the adult teeth start to come in. Because of this, spacers are used to fill in the space where the tooth is missing so that the other teeth stay in place.

Fillings
Resin Composite
Composite resin takes a little longer than traditional fillings, though most people still prefer it because it creates natural-looking teeth. It takes more than one layer, and a special light is used to harden the area around the filling.
Crowns
A tooth can lose its normal shape and size for a variety of reasons. A crown covers the tooth to help restore its original shape and size. Crowns can also be used to make teeth stronger and look better.

Dental Implants
Crowns have a variety of uses. In some cases that require a large filling, there isn’t enough tooth remaining to keep the filling in place. A crown can strengthen the tooth and hold the filling. Crowns can also protect teeth that are weak, or help fix ones that are broken. Discolored or misshapen teeth can be covered by a crown, as can dental implants.

Dr. Cangemi was the first mobile practicing Dentist-Anesthesiologist in the state of North Carolina. He then joined with orthognathic surgery expert Myron Tucker and has established an office based orthognathic surgery as an alternative to the hospital OR. He serves on the Anesthesia Advisory Committee and is an anesthesia examiner for the North Carolina State Dental Board. He publishes and lectures on numerous topics in Anesthesiology.

Dr. Cangemi completed Dental School at the University of North Carolina, where he received the Grover C. Hunter Jr. Award for academic and clinical excellence in Periodontics. He went on to complete a residency in Advanced Education in General Dentistry. While in private practice he completed his certification in intravenous sedation. Desiring more extensive knowledge in anesthesiology, he entered into an anesthesiology residency and the Masters Program at Ohio State University. He obtained his Masters Degree in Anesthesiology and a Certificate of Residency in Anesthesiology from Ohio State University. Dr. Cangemi now provides anesthesiology services for General Dentists, Pediatric Dentists, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and other Dental Specialists, for a wide variety of dental procedures.
