BracesYou know that what you eat directly impacts your health, and that includes the health of your teeth and gums. But it can work the other way around too. If you have an orthodontic appliance, such as braces, or have had certain dental problems or procedures, the health and comfort of your teeth and gums can directly impact what you eat. Here are some tips for what to eat and how to avoid these common dental issues.
OrthodonticsPrashant R. Rao, DDS was born and raised in Charlotte. He graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with a bachelor of science in Psychology before graduating from New York University College of Dentistry. After Dental School, Dr. Rao furthered his education by attending Long Island College Hospital in Brooklyn, NY for a one year GPR. He has continued to study esthetics, implants, endodontics, and limited orthodontics. In addition, Dr. Rao is continually up-to-date in the latest dental technology and advances. He is a member of the American Dental Association, North Carolina Dental Association, Academy of General Dentistry, and South Charlotte Study Club.
Invisalign OrthodonticsAdults who want a straight smile but don’t want to wear traditional braces often choose Invisalign clear braces. Dr. Rao and Dr. Brikina use 3D technology to design a set of Invisalign aligners for each patient they treat. You can remove the aligners as needed, and treatment usually requires less than a year. For more information, visit www.invisalign.com. Below photos are from actual Cedar Walk Dentistry patients!
Dental ImplantsDr. Rao and Jenn took part in the 2-day seminar and teaching surgery for the All-on-4 implant technology. It was an intense 2 days, but they're bringing back lots of knowledge for the Cedar Walk patients!
BridgesWe are a full service dental office. We can meet nearly all dental needs right here in our office without the need for referral to another office. We treat children as well as adults. We do all forms of preventative and restorative care including: cleanings, xrays, fillings, root canal therapy, extractions, crowns, fixed bridges, dentures and partial dentures. We also take pride in our cosmetic work. We offer invisalign, implants, and bleaching.
VeneersPorcelain veneers are thin shells of handcrafted dental porcelain that fit over front teeth. Each veneer is designed to complement your overall smile, as well as your overall appearance. Dr. Rao and Dr. Brikina will consider your existing dentition and bite, as well as your skin tone, features, and face shape, when designing the perfect veneers for you.
CrownsExposed tooth root In healthy teeth, a layer of enamel protects the crowns of your teeth—the part above the gum line. Under the gum line a layer called cementum protects the tooth root. Underneath both the enamel and the cementum is dentin. Dentin is less dense than enamel and cementum and contains microscopic tubules (small hollow tubes or canals). When dentin loses its protective covering of enamel or cementum these tubules allow heat and cold or acidic or sticky foods to reach the nerves and cells inside the tooth. Dentin may also be exposed when gums recede. The result can be hypersensitivity.
Root Canal Treatment"I am so glad I became a new patient of Dr. Rao. I was told I needed two root canals and deep cleanings from another dentist. I felt I needed a second opinion, and Dr Rao confirmed I didn't need either procedure. I love this office. They do not do unnecessary procedures to make money. Dr. Rao and his staff genuinely care about their patients." - Anjali R. from Charlotte
DenturesIf you are missing many teeth, Dr. Rao and Dr. Brikina may recommend dentures or partials. These prosthetics can be fixed or removable, and with modern dental materials, they look totally natural.
Tooth WhiteningSome patients prefer the convenience and gradual change that take-home teeth whitening kits offer. You can achieve the same dramatic brightening results as in office treatment yields – up to eight shades or more – in about two weeks at home.
Cosmetic DentistryDr. Yelena Brikina, DDS graduated from SUNY Stony Brook with a BS in biochemistry, and went on to earn her DDS degree from the SUNY Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine. She furthered her education with a General Practice Residency at the Long Island College Hospital in Brooklyn Heights, and also received certification in Invisalign (clear braces), as well as attended seminars on Implants, Occlusion and Esthetics. Dr. Brikina provides a full range of dental services encompassing prevention, restorative, orthodontics, implant, and cosmetic dentistry.
General DentistryHealthy teeth affect nearly every aspect of our lives even our professional image. However, according to a survey released by the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) and Oral-B Laboratories, many Americans are neglecting to take care of their smile during the workday.
Teeth CleaningYou should visit us twice each year for a teeth-cleaning appointment, even if you don’t have a toothache. We will remove plaque and tartar from your teeth, evaluate your gums and soft tissues for disease, and polish your smile to a dazzling shine.
Fluoride TreatmentPrevention of caries and Candida infection: Cavities, gingivitis, periodontal disease, and fungal infections are common complications of dry mouth. A dry oral environment makes plaque control more difficult, so meticulous oral care and hygiene becomes essential in preventing rampant caries, gingivitis, and periodontal disease. The affected individual should incorporate a low-sugar diet and begin daily use of fluoride treatments and antimicrobial rinses to combat the effects oral dryness has on the teeth and oral tissues. Prescription toothpastes that contain more fluoride, calcium, and phosphate will help protect and remineralize teeth where necessary. Frequent visits to the dentist are necessary to help manage these complications. Since people with dry mouth often develop fungal infections such as thrush (oral candidiasis), they may require topical antifungal treatment such as rinses and dissolving tablets. Dentures often harbor fungal infections, so they should be soaked daily in chlorhexidine or 1% bleach.
Dental SealantsAs more studies come out about the dangers of dental materials containing BPA, you will be happy to know that at Cedarwalk Dentistry, we use only BPA free sealants and fillings!
Oral Cancer ScreeningYour checkup will include digital X-rays, a tooth-by-tooth exam, presentation with our intraoral camera and an oral cancer screening. Dr Rao and Dr. Brikina will also discuss your goals and concerns before presenting a custom treatment plan designed just for you.
Dental ExaminationStress and teeth grinding Diagnosis is an important step before treatment. Part of the dental examination includes checking the joints and muscles for tenderness, clicking, popping or difficulty moving. Depending on the diagnosis, the dentist may refer you to a physician or another dentist.
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
Oral SurgeryOn the rare occasion that a tooth may need to be extracted, Dr. Rao and Dr. Brikina can perform routine oral surgery with optimal patient comfort in the office.
Periodontal SurgeryPeriodontal Surgery – If pockets do not heal after scaling and root planing, periodontal surgery may be needed to reduce the pocket depth and make teeth easier to keep clean.
