The Southern Illinois University is a postsecondary educational institution that offers a wide range of associate, baccalaureate, master's, specialist's, doctoral and professional degree programs. Established in 1869, it is a multicampus university comprising two institutions, including the Southern Illinois University at Carbondale with a School of Medicine at Springfield, Ill., and Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville with a School of Dental Medicine at Alton, Ill., and a center in eastern St. Louis. It has an enrollment of more than 34,000 students and also offers programs in law, medicine and dentistry. Its school of medicine offers courses in various subjects, such as medicine, surgery, pharmacology, anatomy, anesthesiology, and biochemistry and molecular biology. The Carbondale campus comprises various schools and colleges, such as college of agricultural sciences, applied sciences and arts, business and administration, education and human services, engineering, liberal arts, mass communication and media arts, science, graduate school and library affairs. It is located in Carbondale, Ill.
