The bank was founded in 1834 under the name Institution for Savings in Cambridge Massachusetts for the purpose of enabling the average individual to deposit small sums of money, which was unheard of at commercial banks. Cambridge Savings Bank merged with North Avenue Savings Bank in 1971.
