General Info

The Department of Developmental Services, formerly known as the Department of Mental Retardation, is governed by the State of Connecticut. The department offers a range of care services for people with mental retardation. It provides case management, respite care, employment assistance, and family and individual consultation services. The department manages Southbury Training School, which is an independent educational institution that has expertise in the areas of medical, vocational, residential, therapeutic and facility support services. It also assists in the development of functioning and relationship skills. The Department of Developmental Services employs a work force of more than 12,000 people. It operates through administration, finance and information technology, and legal and government affairs divisions.
