Family Practice
Dr. C. Alana Varano is a graduate of UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. She has done training in surgery and is board certified in Family Medicine. She is a member of the American Academy of Urgent Care Medicine (AAUCM) and the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP). She began practicing emergency medicine at St. Peter’s University Hospital in 1985 and acted as the Assistant Director of the department from 1990 until 2010. Her responsibilities as Assistant Director included the management of various quality assurance and performance improvement initiatives within the department. She participated in the development, implementation and testing of the hospital disaster management plan. She acted as physician liaison to various hospital committees including Continuous Quality Improvement Committee, Critical Care Committee, Domestic Violence Task Force, and Pharmacy Committee. In addition to her clinical responsibilities, Dr. Varano was responsible for patient satisfaction. Dr. Varano has significant teaching experience and has been an instructor for the American Heart Association in Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support. She has developed training programs for EMTs and provided continuing education for volunteer rescue squads.

Dr. Anita Bhavnani is a board-certified Emergency Physician who has been in practice since 1992. She graduated from Hahnemann University, School of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA in 1987. After an Internship in Internal Medicine at Morristown Memorial Hospital in Morristown, NJ, she completed her Emergency Medicine Residency from Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, VA in 1991. Dr. Bhavnani is board-certified in Emergency Medicine and is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians. She started working at St. Peter's University Hospital in 1991 as an Attending Physician in the Emergency Department. In addition, Dr. Bhavnani has a focus on International Emergency Medicine. She has been actively involved in the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), especially the International Section of ACEP and is currently the Deputy Newsletter Editor of the International Section of ACEP. She is the president of the Global Academy of Emergency Medicine and the Immediate Past President of the American Academy of Emergency Medicine in India and is actively involved in promoting EM, though education, advocacy, and capacity building in countries where EM is still developing, the current focus being India.
