Dental Examination
It is recommended that a panorex screening x-ray, along with a dental examination, be performed on all patients around the age of seven to count the teeth and determine whether all the adult teeth are present. This exam is usually performed by your general dentist and you will then be referred to an orthodontist or an Oral Surgeon should there be a concern regarding eruption.

Jaw Surgery
Prior to any treatment, you will have a thorough consultation with our surgeon in which all of your questions will be answered. It is important to understand that orthognathic surgery and the required pre and post-operative care may require some time to complete. You should carefully consider the risks and steps to this or any other medical procedure before choosing to move forward. The consultation is followed by a thorough examination. At this time, facial measurements, digital X-rays and or cone beam scan and dental impressions will be made. Your surgeon will then further advise you on the best course of treatment for your particular case.
Maxillofacial Surgery
At Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Associates of WNY, we make every effort to provide you with the finest surgical care and the most convenient financial options. To accomplish this goal, we work hand-in-hand with you to maximize your insurance reimbursement for covered procedures. We ask that you bring your insurance information with you to your evaluation so that we can expedite reimbursement. We will be happy to file a pre-determination at your request. Bone Grafting
Patients who have missing teeth for an extended period of time may need a bone grafting procedure. When a tooth is missing and not replaced, the jawbone begins to deteriorate over time.

Orthodontics
Just as "orthodontics" refers to straightening the teeth, "orthognathics" refers to straightening of the jaw. Orthognathic surgeries involve repositioning, shortening or lengthening the upper or lower jaw. Orthognathic surgery will help to improve appearance but will also improve the proper function of the jaw.
Braces
In cases where the canine tooth will not erupt spontaneously, the orthodontist and oral surgeon will work together to get the erupted tooth where it should be. Each patient is evaluated on an individual basis. The most common scenario will call for the orthodontist to place the braces on the teeth. A space will be created to provide room for the impacted tooth to be moved into it's proper position in the dental arch. Our Board Certified Oral Surgeon will perform a procedure in the office, in which the gum above the impacted tooth will be lifted up to expose the impacted canine. Once the tooth is exposed, our oral surgeon will bond an orthodontic bracket to the exposed tooth. The bracket will have a chain that will attach the impacted canine.
