We see people daily that have experienced great success in shedding weight after pregnancy, or slimmed down through diet, exercise, or weight-loss procedures. But often these patients remain frustrated by loose skin, stretch marks, and stubborn pockets of fat around their midsection.

The latest technological advancements inspired Dr. Reid and Dr. Gordon to look at body contouring in an entirely new light. For decades, traditional liposuction, although considered the gold standard, was plagued with complications, such as contour irregularities, excessive blood loss, excessive pain and bruising, skin burns, and loose skin, just to name a few. Surgeons were frustrated with the limited technology available, but in 2007, everything changed, and there was an influx of new liposuction devices, like SmartLipo™, Cool Lipo, and Body-Jet. It was a promising time, but it was short lived. Unfortunately, these technologies delivered more complications than solutions, and the complications were much harder to treat than in the past, primarily because of tissue damage from heat generated by these “fat-melting devices”. The multi million-dollar companies behind these devices invested in slick direct to consumer marketing instead of scientific research. To make matters worse, they sold the majority of devices to non-plastic surgeons whose only training was a weekend course. Liposuction was being offered in family practice, gynecology and dermatology offices across the country. Body contouring centers were set up and staffed by emergency room physicians. Although the providers were doctors, many weren’t surgeons, much less board-certified plastic surgeons. Complications skyrocketed and plastic surgeons saw an influx in revisionary liposuction cases.

Before Surgery – As with all surgeries there are things you must do to be prepared. Avoid blood thinners like ibuprofen, aspirin, and Tylenol for two weeks prior, and two weeks after surgery. If you have medical issues like asthma or diabetes, get medical clearance beforehand. If you are older than 50, you will need an EKG performed. If you smoke, stop!

Vaser Hi-Def Lipo allows a surgeon more precision in the reduction of fat to follow the natural contours of the muscles. It allows for sculpting and not just the reduction of fat. Vaser’s ultrasound technology also reduces trauma to surrounding tissue which can allow for a quicker recovery and less bruising. When used correctly, it can give better contraction of the overlying skin, as well.

Angela is a peri-operative nurse at Inspire Surgery Centre. She joined our team in 2017 after moving back to Austin from the Midland/Odessa area. She brings 17 years of nursing experience from several specialties including: pediatric oncology, interventional radiology, and outpatient surgery. Angela routinely receives praise from the patients at Inspire. Dr. Ashley Gordon is a native of Louisiana. After graduating from Tulane University and LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans, she went on to train in general surgical residency at St. Vincent’s Hospital and Medical Center in New York, New York. During her general surgery training, she was chosen to spend a year as a Postdoctoral Scholar at the internationally renowned Children’s Institute for Surgical Science, Departments of Fetal Surgery & Plastic Surgery, The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. During this time, she pursued her research interests in the biological behavior of skin and scarless wound healing with clinical fetal surgery. This research won the Aesthetic Surgery Education and Research Foundation Grant in 2001, and she was awarded the Best Scientific Paper at the 35th Anniversary Meeting of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons. Her research continues to win awards, most recently, the Wound Healing Society’s Anita Roberts Award, an award given to the best research article of the year published in Wound Repair & Regeneration.
Cyst Removal
Although the direct neck lift does leave a scar under the chin and at the top of the neck, the Z-patterned closure allows the incision to heal very well and even stay nicely camouflaged within the creases of the hair-bearing portion of the neck skin. Since this incision is not a tell-tale sign of cosmetic surgery, most men find it to be more socially acceptable, because they can attribute it to almost anything—like cyst removal or thyroid surgery.

Face Lift

Neck Lift

Blepharoplasty
Lower blepharoplasty with re-draping of the fat and release of the tear trough to create a smooth contour between the lid and the cheek. Excess skin is also removed.
Abdominoplasty
A mini tummy tuck or mini abdominoplasty will work only if you have a small amount of loose skin and if it’s all located below your belly button. Ideal candidates will also have limited excess fat and little to no stretch marks. Unfortunately, most women aren’t a candidate for a mini tummy tuck, as pregnancy typically affects the upper and lower abdominal skin and the underlying muscles. Many women desire a mini tummy tuck because the incision is shorter, about the length of a C-section scar. A shorter scar is created because much less skin is removed. Also, there is no scar around the belly button since the mini tummy tuck only focuses on the lower part of the abdomen. Our surgeons won’t correct just the lower muscle laxity (below the belly button) because if you repair only the lower portion of the rectus diastasis, the upper portion, above the belly button to the sternum, will bulge even more because it is also weak.
