Brother Wolf Animal Rescue

Brother Wolf may be perfectly nice when you go there to adopt, but take an animal back and they treat you like the lowest of the low -- worse than scum, as if you are someone who beats animals and throws them out for fun. I adopted a cat through BW that I had for a year. Needless to say, I spent that entire year trying my best to make this cat happy. She repeatedly peed and defecated on my things, out of spite. I don't care if it's believable to anyone, I lived with that cat for a year and she was a huge you-know-what that I just couldn't please. When I was finally at my wit's end (after she'd soaked yet another bath mat in pee and left a giant pile of crap despite a clean litter box), I brought her back to the shelter. They were rude, condescending, inconsiderate, and downright cruel. They told me I didn't care about my cat, when I was already crying about having to give her up. Despite my donation of toys and money, I was treated like a horrible person.

I know these people see humans carelessly abandon animals every day, but that doesn't mean that everyone is a criminal. Circumstances change, and sometimes an animal is not right for a household -- or vice versa. There is no excuse for the cruelty I experienced that day, and I have talked to several people about it who also loved their animals and also were treated like filth. I only wish I had told that woman what a raging such-and-such she was, instead of just crying.

I appreciate what Brother Wolf does/tries to do, but I won't be using them again.



In late May I went there to get a cat as a gift for my parents (my mom, really). She especially wanted one that would sit on her lap and get along with their other cat. After talking to one of the employees, she said there was one cat she thought would be perfect. An adult male, age five. She also said that other than a few missing teeth, he was in perfect health.



My mom liked the cat, but when she brought him to the vet about a week later, she discovered a few things. First, the cat had infections in both ears. Second, he had arthritis and the vet thought he was much older than five. Brother Wolf did offer a free 30-day insurance policy for the cat, which I had signed up for. However, because his ailments were considered pre-existing (conditions we knew nothing about), the insurance wouldn't cover any of his medical care.



I don't think (or hope anyway) that Brother Wolf was lying when they said the cat was in good health, but that just means they did a very poor job of checking him out. I know they rely on donations and volunteers, but that shouldn't be an excuse for negligence. I hope they're doing a better job of examining their animals so this situation doesn't happen to anyone else.

I’m looking at my terrier mix as I write this. Memories of adopting her 2 years ago now, are cherished ones. On her “Gotcha Day,” a staff member placed this puppy gently into my arms and we became family. It was such a wonderful event that I decided to adopt another dog 7 months later. I have experienced great joy at Brother Wolf Animal Rescue.

I can't say enough good things about this hardworking, dedicated group! Just tour the facility, and you will see what I mean. They are always acting on the behalf of the animals and are careful with placements. They really know all of these pets and their personalities. Fabulous organization. (Enough said.)

Stay away. They treat you like crap in front of anyone who can hear if you have to return an animal.They get evry personal about how they attack you . I had my children with me and they actually said " What kind of mom am I to be teaching my kids that animals are disposible" I had adopted a dog that after a year I still did not feel close to. I had a few people who wanted her but because I signed a contract to return her if I could not keep her. I toook her back. I was actually treated so bad I cried for days after truning her in. Stay away from them and go elsewhere. Humans should always be treated better than animals. If that makes me bad. I don't care.

Quite a few of the volunteers are really friendly and helpful, but the last experience I had with management went very poorly. When asked about the death of our last dog, we were honest and told him he had bolted out the door between my parents' legs and we hadn't seen him until the pound called with the unfortunate news. We received a tongue lashing at the front desk and was essentially denied adoption privileges, judging from the doodling the volunteer scolding us did on our adoption application. Upon the finishing of the volunteer's rant about how we were "irresponsible pet owners" for allowing him to "escape like that," and how the dog we were hoping do adopt would need a much larger yard than the one we had to offer (which was pretty large already), two of their dogs bolted from a cage as a different volunteer was trying to open it (much like our former dog did before we lost him), and headed for an unguarded front door and a wide open back garage door. If the happy attitude of quite a few of the volunteers had been a consistency amongst all employees, I would give this establishment a higher rating.

My personal poor experience aside:



Overall, the establishment seemed a bit overcrowded and some of the animals were misplaced (i.e. big dogs were in small crates, small dogs were in large kennels). Prices seem reasonable, though, and it's nice that all animals have vaccinations and de-worming. I'd recommend this establishment to a person with a large home and an extensive, fenced-in lawn. Not the kind of place middle-class citizens would want to check out first.

I have adopted 2 animals from brother wolf and have had problems both times. Been lied to about the age of the animal and other issues that might have effected whether or not we adopted these animals.

When we were looking for a dog they showed us 2 dogs! I really find it hard to believe that was all they had to choice from.

Staff can be rude and I agree with other poster that they want way too much personal information.

I will not be going back there again.

We adopted our puppy from Brother Wolf Animal Rescue and what a great experience it was! They make it so convenient with their long hours of being opened during the week and on both Saturday and Sundays! Their love for the animals in their care is evident. Can't say enough great things about Brother Wolf. The comprehensive care of the animals in their rescue is unprecedented. I have never had anything but a positive experience with this organization. If you are looking to add to your canine or feline family, you won’t regret going to Brother Wolf.

BWAR was the cleanest, most friendliest shelter I have ever visited. I have visited a lot of shelters. The staff was courteous, polite and eager to help me find the right match as a companion for me and the 2 dogs I already had. I found it encouraging that they asked questions about me, my home and what kind of life I could provide a dog. This is adoption, after all, and I wasn't purchasing a new couch! Questions should be asked. They made me feel safe, comfortable and welcome. All the animals looked very happy and healthy and I could tell that they were loved. Oh, and I live in Shiloh so you can see that they do not discriminate. I can see why the wouldn't want a cat to be an outside cat in a neighborhood that is so close to main highways, etc though. I adopted a great dog and he gets along wonderfully with my other 2 dogs. Thanks Brother Wolf Animal Rescue. I give you 5 stars!

The staff is all very friendly and helpful. They took time to answer all my questions even though they were extremely busy. I admire the work they do and realize it has to be very difficult.

Watch out for this place! Adopt from somewhere else, lest you want a broken hearted kid. I agree with the first reviewer. We got a cat from them and gave her a loving home. She was skinny and her coat looked terrible, but she was so friendly and my 4 year old son loved her so we picked her. We tried to make her an indoor cat only, but she was miserable just being inside, so we decided to let her be an inside/outside cat. An animal control worker picked up my cat and returned her to B. W. and the manager, " Joell, WOULD NOT GIVE US THE CAT BACK!!!! She humiliated my wife in front of at least 10 people, called her irresponsible and curtly told her she would not give us the cat. My son was devistateded. When I called to confront Joell, she told me that since we live near the Shiloh neighborhood, we could not have the cat because she has seen what, and I quote, "those people do to cats down there"! Can you beleive that?. She descriminated against the Shiloh neighborhood, and broke my kids heart. By the way, the cat had gained weight, her coat was beautiful and she ate people tuna 3 times a day. Our neighbors complimented us on how well we took care of the cat. The little dictator felt she knew what was better for the cat than the people who cared for her.

I have given this organization one star, for one reason; I give credit where credit is due, for they do seem to really care about the pets they rescue and offer for adoption. The reasons this organization ONLY got one star are as follows: The discriminate against families with children, they ask questions that are far too personal, and essentially they are very rude people. They put their pets on a pedestal, they may as well do a credit check when adopting out a pet, rather than take into consideration, hey these people seem to really want to give a pet a good home. I will never set foot into this establishment again. While I was there, something that really seemed to bother me, they had two dogs fighting, this is not safe for patrons or for the animals. Unless you want to be treated like trash, I suggest you go elsewhere if you are considering pet adoption.
